Musical Futures at Coombeshead College is proving to be a great success. Each pupil has the opportunity to work on their own chosen instrument, form a band and work towards a performance. The level of their progress is determined by themselves. The teacher is the facilitator and the pupils are in charge of their own progress and learning. This personalised learning approach is proving to be very successful and has helped our uptake at Key Stage 4 to over 60 pupils this year. This session will show you the insight into the current models being run and how Coombeshead has developed its own model to fit with our facilities and resources. We will give teachers and pupils the opportunity to see how Musical Futures works as a Year 9 project and with the right planning and enthusiasm, the positive impact it can have on a Music department.

Songwriting workshop with Sam Gray - Sam Gray is a like a breath of fresh air, his effortless songwriting abilities draw you in and keep you there. Manchester based Sam is a master of his craft, classically trained he knows what he wants, down to every last note. The precision of every instrument is skillfully drawn together to bring the music to life, you are there with him. From a humble background his superlative lyrics (about trying to break out of a small town and breaking up with the love of his young life to pursue his dreams) and colourful spring-like melodies would grace the soundtrack of the biggest blockbusters. Sam Gray is new, fresh and inspirational, Sam Gray is now, he is today and he definitely is tomorrow!

Instant Band - Participants will be introduced to some easy drumming patterns, and simple chord shapes on guitar and keyboard.  Starting with a one-chord song, they will progress to two and three chord songs.  Players who can already play their instruments can work on band skills such as arrangements.  A group who have already worked out which instrument each is going to play will work best.
