November 2010 In November we invited young people aged between 11 - 19 to come along and help create a mural on the boards at the new site. Photographs from the event can be seen on Flickr.
October 2010 The new building in Cullompton will provide a 21Century library, 'Work Hub' for small businesses, an adult learning centre, café and more. It is anticipated that other services will also be provided from the facility too - including careers advice for young people, a memory café, the ability to register births, deaths and marriages. In addition, the building will have a small amount of meeting space but this facility will also be available at the St Andrews development. The two new buildings will be quite different in what they will provide for the local community. Both the project teams are working closely together to ensure that the buildings complement each other in terms of purpose and facilities. In addition, we are sharing information to ensure a co-ordinated approach is taken in delivering the projects. For example, construction delivery schedules will be shared and managed to ensure disruption within the town is reduced and a partnership approach has been adopted for keeping the community up to date with progress in the form of bi-monthly joint newsletters. We are currently identifying a shortlist of names for the new building and will share our ideas with the local community in the coming months. October sees the start of work on the former PCT site. Pearce Construction have moved on to the site and erected perimeter hoardings to secure the area and have set up a site office and welfare facilities for construction workers. Latest schedule:

This process includes Members of both Devon County Council's Development Control Committee and Mid Devon Distict Council's planning department visiting the site to discuss the proposals. The planning application is scheduled to be considered by the Committee on the 1st September. The technical design stage is now underway. During this Stage final proposals are developed for the building, building regulations will be submitted and plans put in place to co-ordinate all the different components and elements to realise the construction. June 2010 The Planning application was submitted. A decision is expected on 1 September 2010. Next steps Demolition of the current building is expected in late summer / early autumn with mobilisation and construction starting in late autumn. May 2010 Two workshops were held in May. Facilitated by Concept Design, the workshops were with a group of local young people and a group made up from members of the local community – both library and non-library users. The purpose of the workshops was to understand how different groups will want to use the new facilities, to consider how to maximise the internal layout and consider furniture options. Pearce Construction (part of the Building Consortium South West) was awarded the construction contract for the development. The appointment of the Barnstaple based company will provide a boost for the local building industry. April 2010 Concept Design was appointed as the interior design company for the development. Concept Design has many years experience of designing modern library interiors. March 2010 On the 25 and 26 March 2010 a community engagement event was held at the Walrond’s Centre. The event, over two days, was very well attended and the local community were able to view and provide feedback on the proposed plans for the development. Those comments were analysed and as a consequence some changes to the design were made. 23 November 2009 During October and November, children and young people from Cullompton have been getting involved in the new library and community hub project. After Children’s Librarian Kate Mackenzie came to speak to them during assembly in October, children from St Andrew’s and Willowbank primary schools filled out consultation forms with their families to tell us what they would like from the new library, ranging from opening hours to types of stock. The children wrote or drew their ideas and prizes were awarded for the best ones. The winners were Zoe, Molly, Lucy, Megan, Ryan, Caitlin, Lewis and Bradley. You can have a look at some of the inspiring suggestions in the Photo Gallery. All families responding to the consultation were entered into a prize draw for a family ticket to Diggerland and a £20 book voucher. The winners were the Bending family from Willowbank and the Ruth family from St Andrew’s. All of the winners were invited to a prize-giving event in the library on Friday 20th November. During November, Young People’s Librarian Lesley Salter, held four consultation sessions with young people at the John Tallack Centre, Cullompton Community College and Paradox (St Andrew’s) Youth Group. Over 150 young people got involved, calling for a better selection of books, computers, comfy seating and a safe place to meet and chat to friends, among other things. Work will continue with young people in Cullompton as part of the Reading Agency’s Participate South West project. The next step is to improve current provision for young people in the existing library and engage with young people in the town to enable them to influence ongoing decisions regarding a space for them within the new Cullompton Library. A brief has been developed for the architects incorporating all of the comments and suggestions received from consultation with the community, library staff and our community hub partners. Concept designs are currently being drawn up. There will be further opportunities to be involved in the project as it develops – have a look at the Get Involved page to find out more. 2 September 2009 There was a good turn out for the public consultation event at the Town Hall, despite heavy rain!
