Devon for Everyone


2007 Apprentice intake

Devon has a large and growing population of older people and an increasing number of young people leaving the area.  Access to services such as leisure, health or child care in large rural areas can be particularly difficult for people of all ages.

Older and younger people are using increasingly different words and phrases, presenting challenges to ensure that our communication methods are those which everyone is comfortable to use.  

Working with Devon’s young people, we have a thriving Devon Youth Parliament and Scrutiny panel.

We have developed and maintain a popular Apprenticeship Scheme image - PDF icon (119KB - pdf help) aimed at attracting young people to a career with the council, and participate in the Natonal Graduate Development Programme to encourage younger graduates into managerial posts.

We work closely with and support initiatives to ensure that older people can participate in the way we develop and deliver our services through Devon Senior Council.

We have developed web pages designed specifically for age-related issues. UR Devon image - PDF icon (NaNMB - pdf help) is the first of a number of initiatives to provide integrated access to support services for young people in Devon. Pages designed for people over 50 image - PDF icon (NaNMB - pdf help) offer information and advice on issues ranging from social and leisure facilities, travel and financial, to employment and volunteering.

The Council supports the Government's Age Positive campaign that encourages employers to have a diverse workforce. Further information about the campaign is available from the Age Positive website.

ACAS alongside a wealth of other guidance provide advice on preventing age discrimination including a comprehensive section on their website covering frequently asked questions and guidance for employers and employees.

The National Youth Agency have developed a standards framework, called Hear by Right.  This is to help improve  the active involvement of children and young people in the continual improvement of an organisation’s activities.  Devon County Council is committed to the Hear by Right standards and has supported Devon’s children and young people to develop a Devon-specific strategy, called Bigger Voices, Better World image - PDF icon (921KB - pdf help).

We have been working closely with older and younger people, to build and strengthen networks.

Exeter Age Concern has developed a Senior Council, and we have been working with older people in many communities to ensure that the thoughts and needs of all older people are represented.  Part of the work included a county-wide event where the people attending discussed the issues they faced growing older in Devon. It also provided an opportunity for the Senior Council to get involved in the improvement of local services. This raised the potential for organising a similar event in North Devon.

We have developed Hear By Right Action Plans in all areas of the Council, and our most senior managers Champion the inclusion of young people in the review and planning of services.
