Yelverton Community Appraisal - June 1997

Sport & Entertaiment

The views of facilities for age groups other than the 15-24's mentioned above were better, although very few thought that facilities were good for any group. Of those having an opinion, however, most judged the facilities for the various groups as at least reasonable, with the proportions shown in the table below:

Under 8's60%
25-60's66%
Over 60's80%

Three times as many people participated in sporting pursuits than in organised social activities. 860 people participated in at least one sport, with cycling the most popular. Tennis, golf, and horse riding were also very popular sports. Of social activities, the Royal British Legion was the most popular.

Employment, Education & Training

There is remarkably low unemployment in Yelverton - just 15 people are currently seeking work and we hope that they too, soon find employment. The majority of people work in Plymouth but there is a surprisingly high number, nearly a quarter, working or studying from home.

Of the 25% of people doing voluntary work, this is divided almost equally between the village and elsewhere.

Of those expressing an opinion, 44% (324) thought adult learning provision was poor. A quarter of the replies stated an interest in vocational training, with computing/technology being the most popular followed by professional/managerial training and then skilled/craft.

Health & Housing

It was pleasing to find a very high level of satisfaction with the medical services. We hope to fill some gaps in the services, and the diffculty some people have in getting to the existing ones, through voluntary means.

Although well under 10% stated a need for alternative accommodation, there are still 47 households needing somewhere else to live, mainly a family home to buy. 13 members of households have had to move away from Yelverton due to lack of suitable accommodation.

When asked if enough is being done to house young people in Yelverton, 50% had no opinion, but of those who did, two thirds (398) thought that not enough was being done. Less than a quarter would object to a development to help meet the housing needs of local people.

What kind of additional housing
do you think Yelverton needs?
