Local School
Over 85% of us (across all age groups) stated that the school is important. Only 4% feel it is unimportant. On the question of who supports the local school, 40 of us send our children there, 33 support it financially, 101 attend functions (45% of replies), and 51 support it in other ways. Only half of us have a view on whether the school should be more available to the local community outside school hours, but of those of us that do, 75% said ‘Yes’, facilities should be opened to the public. Action: This information will be passed to the school
On the question of whether we feel our elected representatives in local government are sufficiently aware of local concerns and feelings, only 80% have a view regarding parish councillors, and of these 90% feel that they are fully or quite aware, 10% feel they are unaware. Of the 70% who have a view on district councillors, 60% think they are aware. And of the 60% who have a view on county councillors, only 36% think they have any awareness. Regarding planning applications and the planning system, opinion is split: 48% of us who answered believe publicity to be sufficient, and 52% think it isn’t, and just over half of us (56%) think the way the planning system is implemented satisfactorily, whilst just under half do not. Again, just over half of us who answered are satisfied with the Dartmoor National Park’s support for our community (55% quite satisfied, 45% were dissatisfied). Most of us (60% of those giving an opinion) would not be prepared to pay a slightly higher council tax for specifically identified needs of the parish which are outside the jurisdiction of the District Council. An overwhelming 84% (of the three-quarters who replied) said more council tax should be paid for holiday homes. Action :This information will be passed to the Parish, District and County Councils. A good response with strong acceptance of the traditional role of the church. Most of us regard the churches as important for normal services and respect its historic nature; their village identity is also supported.
‘Fund-raising events, school concerts, places for young people to hang out’ Of the four stated options, 180 of us would like choral concerts and 164 would like instrumental recitals (70% of response); drama and poetry readings would also appeal to 115 and 108 of us respectively. Any of these would therefore be viable. Recommendation: It is felt serious consideration should be given to this, and this information will be passed to the P.C.C’s. We gave a very strong response to both issues: 78% of us wish to see more jobs in Widecombe, and 68% of us would favour small-scale light industrial workshops in the parish. Action :This information will be passed to the P.C. Viability is the key question! Maybe there are redundant buildings in the parish which could be put to this use? Worth exploring. Has anyone or any company applied to construct same? If ‘yes’ with what response?
209 of us think the parish should celebrate the Millennium, and 128 of us would help get things going. There is enough interest here to start the ball rolling. ‘Purchase of trees, for all in parish’ Action & Recommendation: This information will be raised at the Public Meeting, in order to discuss the topic, perhaps to form a working party, and to cover other bodies’ tentative plans. It will also be passed to the Parish Council.
‘The answers to many of the questions have been ‘no opinion’, - this is because we have not lived in the parish long enough to be able to make a judgement, not because we are not interested’ [DF&F Main Menu] [Community Profiles Menu] [Community Appraisals Menu] [Top of Page] [Devon C.C.
