Introduction

161 houses and 338 people replied to the questionnaire, which was an 82% return.

Half the responding houses were in Widecombe Village (83), 56 in Leusdon and 22 elsewhere in the parish. Two thirds of them are one or two person households.

Housing

Type of Housing Graph

Only 6% are opposed to new housing and it was reported that several people have left the parish due to lack of housing.

‘Council houses not to be sold’

Of those who feel there is a need for extra housing 78% support rented accommodation, and 39% support privately owned housing.

Action & Comment:

This information will be sent to the Dartmoor National Park & Teignbridge District Council.

Although these figures are very interesting they sadly reflect the need for affordable housing for young local people. Rented housing would presumably have to be built and owned by a housing association so that it always remained available for lower income local or young tenants.

Traffic, Transport & Highways

286 of us have daily access to a vehicle, although 44 people have none. If a private car sharing scheme was set up 26 people would use it daily and 31 weekly.

Only a few people use the bus at present (6 daily), but 42 people would use a more regular bus service daily and 49 weekly (there is no mention of what the route might be). A local taxi service would be used by 66 people at least monthly (18 weekly or more frequently).

‘Bus service - did not know there was one’

‘The 40-mph signs painted on the roads should be erased. They are all in the wrong place and spoil the look of the parish’

‘Emphasis should be on care through villages’

‘More clearing of road drains, to prevent flooding’

Action & Recommendation:

This information will be passed to the Parish Council. For the rest of us, there are a number of local ‘arrangements’ already; perhaps more publicly-minded car owners can get involved to help the minority without access to transport - a small group could be set up at the Public meeting.

68% of us (222) want revision of the 40mph speed limit signs; there is very strong feeling against the signs, such as

‘They are Ugly - Badly Sited and Very Expensive’

Widecombe Bus Picture‘The money could be used more wisely’ ‘Speed bumps’

Most of us (90%) considered road signs were adequate (we locals know our way round!).

Most of us (65%, 215) are satisfied with the state of the roads, but many of the minor roads are said to be crumbling at the edges, and 58% of us are even prepared to accept a small increase in PC precept to subsidise an extra LOCAL Lengthman.

71% of us do not want more car parking. However, some people did want more parking near shops, and not everyone was happy with such confined parking on the moor.

51% (166 of us) do not want more cattle grids, but 29% (95 of us) do want more in a number of different locations: Buckland Bridge, Lower Dunstone, Cator Gate, and Poundsgate.

This information will be passed to the Parish Council and the Dartmoor National Park
