TRAFFIC & TRANSPORT

Danger Spots

This seemed likely to arouse strong views and it did! Over 70% of Car Picture respondents felt there were identifiable danger spots on the Parish’s roads and lanes. This opinion was strongest in Bittaford, the common concern about speeding on the ‘old A38’ and traffic flow problems on Bittaford Hill.

"More double lines on narrow curving roadways"

Ownership/Parking

The 391 households responding owned 585 cars and vans, and 24 motorcycles - local garages and motor mechanics will be pleased with this statistic! Parking is clearly a problem as only a third have private garages. Half the Bittaford residents thought their parking facilities were poor and that parking on Bittaford Hill was an acute problem. Ugborough villagers were only slightly more content, and some felt that the pub trade created parking problems for residents.

"Small village car park to be provided as close as possible to the viaduct"

"I think this is something we should live with, the world does not revolve around car parking"

"Pub users take up a lot of room in the evenings and pubs need to purchase their own parking lot"

Public Transport

Money PictureApart from school transport with which most Parishioners were content, there was widespread dissatisfaction with public transport.

"Public transport is simply not available so cannot choose to use it"

"Community bus is a boon."

High fares are still a factor for many not yet outweighed by increased parking charges in towns and cities. 199 people would use public transport frequently if costs were lower, and 162 if services were more frequent.

The Appraisal was completed before improvements were made to bus services, and it would be interesting to see if concern has now eased regarding the frequency of service.

If a voluntary transport scheme were set up to share vehicles or give lifts a staggering 195 people would offer seats in their cars, and 169 would be happy to use such a service.

Real scope for investigation here!

Slip Road

68% of parishioners would welcome slip road access on to the A38 in a westerly direction, and a corresponding exit. 4 out of 5 who expressed an opinion would like to avoid the Ivybridge junction.

"Most important for slip road access at Wrangaton to reduce traffic to Ivybridge"

ENVIRONMENT

Recycling PictureThe problems and nuisances that most concern parishioners are dog mess and lack of recycling facilities. 75% cited the first of these problems and 56% the second.

"Recycling in Ivybridge should be open at all times"

Litter and illegal tipping are not seen as major problems, although both were rated ‘some problem’ by over 40%. Slippery roads and the number of horses on the roads are other problems, and the state of footpaths concerned a third of parishioners.

"Recycling is not the most efficient or environmentally conscious method of waste management"

Horse PictureThere were many positive comments about the countryside; maintaining verges and paths is regarded as important by over three quarters of people and the desire for play areas, conservation areas and clear signposting saw over 50% in favour of action.

"The countryside is all right as it is, why try to bring the city into the country with safe fencing, picnic areas etc?.."

An emphasis on our recreational activities was strongly supported; over three quarters feel that walking and horse riding are particularly appropriate in our Parish and nearly half felt that farm trails and artistic opportunities suited our surroundings. Cycling, hunting, shooting and fishing were supported by over a third of respondents as being activities to promote.
