Sports, Social and Entertainment.
Many suggestions were forthcoming (from a total of 316 respondents) for various activities.
Editorial Comment. The swimming pool has experinced financial problems with a failed boiler etc., but a recent feasibility study saw the formation of a "maintenance committee" and its survival is now hopefully secured. The nature of its consatruction allows safe usage by the children for whom it was built, though it is not suited for adult use. As we go to press the new swimming pool at crediton is now open.
Editorial Comment. Some of the above activities already take place in the Parish, and it is again apparent that a Parish Directoray and/or more imformative news-sheets are required..
Recommended Action. Some of the activities requested may seem somewhat amitious, but organisations such as the Drama Group and Sports and recreation Committee might consider an open meeting to discuss these matters with interested parties. "Villages in Action" could also be consulted where appropriate.
Transport and Highways.
Parking
Speeding/Danger Spots
Editorial Comment on the A30 junction. Due to press coverage and recent publicity distributed to each household the Appraisal Committee are not elaborating on what are unanimously accepted as appalling junctions (see comment under local government).
Recommended Action. Parish Council to consider renewing its efforts in relation to parking problemsand possibly involving professional advice' especially as some of the aforementioned' such as Four Oaks Road, are continually under discussion at council meetings. The Council is also to consider installing warning signs to protect pedestrians crossing the road to pathfinder from the bus stop on the opposite side of the road.
Support for danger signs included:
Editorial Comment. After a successful bid by the Parish Committee set up specifically by the ParishCouncil, a traffic calming scheme for the village has been given the go ahead, and £12,000 has been allocated. Confirmation of the scheme, and its proposals, were discussed at a Parish Council meeting in january. the bulk of this money is being used to construct "gateways" and rumble strips at each end of the village on the old A30; a third gateway is proposed for Crediton Road. New speed signs are being incorporated in the "gateways". It is also proposed to extend the 30mph limit on the eastern approach (A30) and in Crediton Road. Any money left over will be used for calming measures in Whitestone Road.
Suggestion: Review situation after measures have been put in place and apply for further funds for additionla calming as discussed at January meeting.
Street Lighting
Editorial Comment. The provision of a community bus was the most popular suggestio, but informationobtained indicates that all options are viable for a feasibility study, especially as some people have experienced difficulties getting to many medical services (see health and social services)
Information and Communications.
There is considerable support for extending the village news-sheet - 160 respondents are willing to pay for it. Parishioners wanting to know what is going on in the Parish generally felt the amount of available information was reasonable. However, 297 respondents (75% of those expressing an opinion) think the Parish is in need of a local directory.
Editorial Comment. This applies only to the tedburn news-sheets. For those who have never seen it, it is available (free of charge)at the corner shop andthe post offie. Pete Bromwell also caries some in his van. It is compiled voluntarily each month and one could reasonably expect to pay for it if more information were to be included.
Recommended Action. Show appreciation for those responsible for its present format, especially as they provide they time free of charge ! However, it is evident that more information is required and a way forward would be, perhaps, to start with a meeting involving those currently responsible, also including a representative from each organisation and business within the Parish. Several respondents have indicated their willingness to help in the compilation of the news-sheet. N.B. The County Council are looking at community based information via telematics (electronic communication), including local community officers.
