What services could be provided?
The blank space within the questionnaire provided some of the following answers: gardening (including the removal of garden refuse), decorating, companionship (form filling etc.) and DIY.
Youth Club, Outreach and Sports
Enough people are willing to assist in either the formation, or maintenance, of these groups.
Recommended Action. Lack of knowledge of available transport could be remedied by distribution of news-sheets and notices in shops etc. Promote the use of Telematics (electronic communication) by the County Council. Doctors surgeries, in conjunction with patients and pharmacists, could invetigate the feasibilty of a prescription delivery service. Perhaps the Parish Council could also discuss the problems with the doctors, social services and Outreach.
Emergency, Environmental and Other Services.
While fire and ambulance services met with general approval, there was concern expressed about the standard of police presence in the Parish - "bobbies on the beat". Only 29 respondents felt general police coverage to be good, 122 thought it was reasonable and 168 considered it to be poor.
Editorial Comment. Parsihioner's views on the emergency services tested opinion or perception of them, and the responses do not necessarily reflect actual experience.
Recommendation. The Parish Council should inform the appropriate services accordingly.
Environmantal and Other Services.
Mains electricity, refuse collection, street lighting and telphone services are considered to be good by the majority of people, with refuse collection getting the biggest vote (388 people said it was good). The other services are generally considered to be reasonable, although 100 people said they were poor, road maintenance and mains water getting the worst reports. However, there has been a noticeable improvement in the water supply since the pipes were relined. provision of litter and dog bins is considered reasonable.
475 people (89% of those with an opinion) would be willing to seperate their refuse. NB. Teignbridge will be adopting this method in 1998.
Although glass recylcing bins are now in place in pathfinder, more are required. The Parich Council could approach Teignbridge District Council for additional bins.
Many expressed a desire for various new services - a DIY store, taxi service, garden suppliers, mains gas, a superstore and a chemist.
Editorial Comment. These are all retail services and may one day be provided for within the Parish. However, it involves prvate enterprise and the viability would have to be assessed by ptential business organisations.
Recommended Action. Suggest those responsible for the news-sheet include list of retail services within the Parish - possibly use the businesses to cover additional cost of printing etc. and /or set up a committee to compile local directory of retail services.
