Getting About

The General feeling is that a relatively large proportion of people have transport problems at some time. The main problems are church activities (9,6%) getting to shops (15,10%), recreational facilities (14,10%) schools and playgroups (15,10%). A small number of people also have problems in getting to medical services.

A large number of respondents (81) said they would use an improved Tavistock bus service.

44 people said they would be prepared to help with voluntary transport and 63 people said they would use such a service and be prepared to contribute to the costs.

‘I would appreciate a longer stay in Tavistock than at present organised’

‘Late mini-bus for youngsters to Tavistock’

‘One daily bus would make an enormous difference’

‘Parish residents will always depend on private transport’

‘Could more use be made of the school bus to Tavistock CC’

‘More pick up points’

‘Some local individuals drive too fast’

‘Development of safer cycle routes could be important to some residents’

‘Some agricultural vehicles drive too fast’

‘Some double yellow lines at the bottom of Horsebridge Hill…to allow uninterrupted access for agricultural vehicles’

‘Outside the church and on Culver Hill’

Recommendation

  1. The Parish Council to provide the Devon Transport Forum with these statistics and comments to include in their study of public transport.
  2. The Parish Council should initiate detailed discussions with volunteers with a view to setting up a voluntary car scheme.
  3. Those interested in using a voluntary car scheme should identify themselves to the Parish Council.

Traffic

Speed

101 out of 172 respondents see speeding as a problem, with a reduced speed limit as a solution. The speed limit desired is split quite evenly.

30 mph 39%

25 mph 30%

20 mph 31%

Recommendation

The Parish Council should approach Devon Highways to advise on imposition on imposition of speed limit. (Note: the painting of a SLOW sign at the north entrance to Sydenham Damerel since the Appraisal process has been in train does not appear to have had any effect on the problem)

Parking

Three areas in the Parish were identified as problem areas for parking: outside the church, on Culver Hill and outside the pub.

Recommendation

The Parish Council should continue to seek a solution to the problems.

Religion

52 people regarded the church and chapel as important for Sunday worship, 83 for baptisms, weddings and funerals and 80 for special services. 103 regarded them as important as historic buildings and 70 thought every parish should have one.

Of those who did not attend church/chapel, out of a total of 141, 30% stated they did not believe, 9% practised another religion and 54% stated their reason as being other commitments/no time or other unstated. 7 people lacked the necessary transport.

Of those 146 people who answered the question, 89 said they would be prepared to make a financial contribution to maintain the church/chapel.

There was quite a lot of interest in the use of the church/chapel for non-religious purposes particularly choral concerts, instrumental recitals, poetry readings and drama. There was only two objections to a non-religious use of the church/chapel

‘Church buildings to used for ‘Something for Youth’

‘’Church needs to be livened up’

‘Services at Stoke Climsland are more regular’

‘I enjoy the bells and hope ringers will continue to use our church’

‘Church too cold’

‘Youth club, council meetings, lectures on topical subjects eg BSE etc’

‘They are very special buildings. If not used for religious purposes they should be demolished’

Recommendation

  1. The results of the above to be passed to the Parish Church and Methodist Chapel authorities for action.
  2. Those willing to contribute to maintain the church/chapel should contact the treasurer of the Parish Church or one of the stewards of the Methodist Church, telephone numbers of whom appear in the Parish News.
  3. Any parishioner who does not attend church/chapel but who would wish to propose use of the buildings for non-religious purposes should contact any of the officers listed in the Parish News.
  4. Those lacking transport should do the same.
