Comments on Housing/Planning Issues

‘I am surprised at the lack of planning control in this Area of Natural Beauty. Just go to the Yorkshire Dales – it’s hard to tell old from new.’

‘There has been too much development in the Parish during the past 10 years – insufficient infrastructure.’

‘Pleased that the Lynhurst Yard has been granted permission for limited development and trust that this will not be changed.’

‘Question of style is too general. Some should be 2 storey and some single storey. House built in Townlake should have been single.’

‘Generally barn conversions appear to have been intelligently thought through but some modern houses in Horsebridge are inappropriate and unsympathetic. Not enough footpaths and that located in field in angle of Horsebridge Hill/Townlake Road ploughed over. New housing proposed in part of S.D. Village – good idea.’

‘Recent proposals do not reflect a village character.’

‘The three large plots at Sydenham Damerel should have been restricted in size so that local young people could afford them.’

‘The granting of planning consent for the residential development of the former agricultural yard was a reckless intrusion of residential development into the open countryside and should have been treated in accordance with previous appeal decisions. This household offered to acquire the land and provide open space of use by the villagers.’

‘The latest house in Townlake could have assumed a lower profile both for less visibility from valley below and for sake of existing houses behind. A number of (single) houses in parish/neighbouring parishes built as 2 storied whereas single storey would have been less prominent.’

‘The area is losing its identity with a hotchpotch of building styles. All new buildings/extensions should be made to blend into the existing traditional buildings by mandatory use of local stone/slate and be of similar style/height. The new building approved for Townlake is totally out of keeping with the area. (Sorry Mr. House).’

‘Fears that properties being built in the area are not in keeping with the surrounding properties. i.e. Townlake.’

‘Disappointment about planning permission being granted for dwelling to be built in the ‘Greenbelt’ area, to the detriment of the countryside.’

‘Due to the increase in development resulting in an increase in traffic, and as most roads in the parish are single track damage to the hedgerows is getting worse and dangerous in some places.’

‘The house nearing completion in Townlake is disappointing. It gives a cramped feeling to the old houses surrounding it. The site would have been ideal for a community garden, min-park, or some such amenity (village pump).’

‘More thought should be given to house style, building materials and quality of workmanship in new properties.’

Education/Training

Questions were posed on the provision of Adult education of which none is available within the parish.

Nearly half of the respondents to the question, expressed an interest in taking up vocational training. Of these, 42 people wanted training in computing/IT skills, 27 in skilled/craft-related subjects, 21 in professional/managerial skills and 20 in rural/agricultural skills

Most of those replying stated that they would be able to reach Tavistock for their training, although two-thirds felt that if courses were to be run in Launceston or Callington they would travel to those locations.

Recommendation

That the Parish Council advise Adult Education and the Agricultural Training Board of expressed requirements and ensure adequate local publicity of courses available.

Health & Social Services

Only half of respondents expressed an opinion on the standard of services provided by

the Medical and Social Services. Of those replying, most thought the service was good or reasonable, with the District Nurse, Day Care and Maternity Care meeting with 100% approval from those who had used them. There were however a small number who had had poor experience.

The lack of NHS dental Services was a point highlighted and deplored by most people in their written comments.

Pie Chart of Difficulty Getting To Services

Quite a number of people had always or occasionally found it difficult to get to the services, particularly to Dental and Hospital appointments.

Recommendation

To advise the results of the questionnaire to the local Health Authority.
