Potential uses for a Community Centre

  1. Pre-School Facilities
  2. Of those expressing an opinion 311 (40%) felt there was a need for more pre-school facilities in the ward.

    Recommendations:

    1. The pre-school activity which respondents most wanted was an Under-Fives Play Area (i.e. 99 people).
    2. This response indicates enough users to make such a facility viable.

Another suggested service was a Playgroup or Crèche. (73 and 61 respectively).
    3. This result to be noted when preparing detailed plans for the Centre and potential providers approached.

  3. Youth Facilities
  4. More Youth Facilities Pie Chart

541 respondents (70%) believe that the Canal Ward needs more youth facilities.

    Recommendations:

    a) This response is a large mandate for the provision of youth activities.
    b) The most popular would be an Out of School Scheme (158 people i.e. 30%) and an Adventure Playground (147 people i.e. 28%). Also a Youth Drop-In Advice Centre (122 people i.e. 23%). This must be noted when preparing detailed plans for the centre and providers will need to be sought.
N.B. All sports facilities of various kinds have been dealt with later in the report under the heading ‘Clubs and Activities.’

  5. Senior Citizen Activities
  6. 456 people (58%) believe that more facilities are needed in Canal Ward for senior citizens.

    Recommendations:

    1. A clear need has been identified. There would be enough users for a Day Centre (196), Drop-In advice Centre (108) and Luncheon Club (149) to make any of these services viable.
    2. These activities along with other ‘clubs’ suitable for this population group must be taken careful account of when drawing up the detailed proposals for the use of the Community Centre and potential providers sought.

If the Sunningmead site was used as a Community Centre:
311 people would like to see Pre-School facilities
    470 Over Fives facilities
    456 Senior Citizen facilities

  7. Clubs and Activities

Most of the suggested clubs would be viable. The following were indicated in order of need/popularity:

  • Outdoor Activities (various sports) – 297
  • Evening Classes – 259
  • Fish & Chip Shop – 220
  • Neighbourhood Watch Scheme – 218
  • Mobile (Sub) Library – 213
  • Centre for the Disabled – 209
  • Functions Rooms – 204
  • Community Social Club – 197
  • Keep Fit Club – 193
  • Computer Club – 143
  • Arts & Crafts Club – 136
  • Gardening Club – 121
  • Go-Karting – 99
  • Skittles – 98

Recommendations:

  1. These results indicate a wide range of potential activities to be considered when drawing up the detailed plan for the Centre.
  2. Providers need to be sought and practicalities considered. Others may well be put forward for consideration but these have evidence of definite support.
  3. The Steering Group feels participation in some activities (such as Go-Karting and Adventure Playground) could be arranged by a Social Club or Out of School Scheme as ‘trips’ outside of the area rather than being offered on site.
