St. Giles On The Heath Community Appraisal Index
Introduction The questionnaire was distributed to 237 households and completed by a respectable 62% (149 households) comprising a total of 318 people. The suggested improvements for which there is most support are Traffic Calming (187 in favour), Pedestrian Crossing (179 in favour), Footpaths (172 in favour), Social Club (156 in favour) and Youth Indoor Facilities (150 in favour). This confirms that the biggest problems associated with the development of St. Giles have arisen as a result of a lack of consideration for pedestrians and a lack of social amenities for a community of this size. I have been here 10 years so would dearly love to see some improvement. I do hope something comes of this venture. However the purpose of undertaking the survey was not simply to confirm what many people already knew. It was to initiate the process of systematically addressing the issues that are most important to the people of St. Giles, wherever possible using our own resources, otherwise in partnership with such bodies as District and County Councils, whilst seeking whatever grants may be applicable and using as much of the time, money and skills of the people of St. Giles as they feel willing to afford. The important thing at this point is to ensure that the issues raised are addressed. Yet in this respect the appraisal has been rather too successful. If we allow for the various sporting activities and clubs which people want to see organised, there are as many as 28 separate issues to be carried forward. If this report is to amount to more than simply a summary of what has been found it must establish a framework for further action. Accordingly we have attempted to summarise the principal findings of the survey whilst integrating those findings with specific proposals for what happens next. (Copies of the full statistics are available to anyone who wishes to read them). Acknowledgements The Steering Group organising the appraisal would like to thank the Community Council of Devon and in particular Mike Knight for their support and guidance together with the Parish Council. They would also like to thank all those who participated in the initial meetings which set up the Steering Group and outlined the issues to be addressed, the volunteers who helped distribute and collect the survey, and Joyce Singleton for letting us put the Collection Box in the Shop/Post Office. Finally they would like to thank the children of St. Giles Primary School for their enthusiastic ideas for the appraisal's cover, and in particular Daniel Priest on whose artwork the final cover was based.
