HOUSEHOLDS

Questionnaires were distributed to 123 households and 91 were returned, representing the views of 188 people aged 11 years or over. We were unable to deliver Questionnaires to 10 households as they appeared to be temporarily unoccupied. A further 2 Questionnaires were returned too late to be analysed but their comments and views have, as far as possible, been taken into consideration. This represents a 76% completion rate. The detailed results of the analysis are held by the Parish Council.

POPULATION BY AGE

OCCUPATIONS

  • 8 children under 4, 5 are in pre-school playgroup.
  • 15 children are in primary school.
  • 17 children are in secondary school.
  • 7 young people are in tertiary education.
  • 68 adults are employed.
  • 50 adults are self-employed.
  • 10 adults are unemployed.
  • 44 adults are retired.
  • 5 people are disabled.

CARS

There are 160 cars and 9 motorbikes in the 91 households. 17 households have 3 or more cars and 7 have no cars, 14 cars are parked on the road.

HOUSING

HOUSING NEED

In the last 5 years we are told that 29 people have left Spreyton, 17 because of lack of housing or suitable employment. The identified housing need is:

  • 3 people who are looking for alternative accommodation now.
  • 18 people who will be looking for alternative accommodation in the future.
  • 11 people who are unable to move to more suitable accommodation because of cost or availability.
  • 6 people who require sheltered housing.

ACCEPTABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

83% consider that more housing is needed in the Village with only 7% being against further development and 10% having no opinion. The majority of people would like to see a mixed development with:

  • Affordable housing for young people.
  • Housing for rental.
  • Some larger family homes for local people, to meet present and future needs of young couples as they need more space for growing families.

EDUCATION

ADULT EDUCATION

There is considerable interest in adult education. The subjects in most demand are:

  • Computing.
  • Arts and crafts.
  • Languages.
  • Fitness/exercise.

Only about 50% of people responding say that they are able to reach established centres for classes (Okehampton, Chagford, Crediton and Tavistock). Over 50% support the use of Spreyton School, outside school hours, for classes. The Appraisal Steering Group will investigate to see if progress can be made in this area.

NURSERY SCHOOL/ PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP

  • 71 (40%) people consider that the Village needs a nursery school or pre-school playgroup.
  • 10 people are prepared to help run it.
  • 37 people would help raise funds.
  • 12 people would send their children.

The Steering Group will follow this up.

RELIGION

The Parish Church/Chapel is considered to be important:

 As a place of worship

41%

For weddings, baptisms and funerals

65%

As an historic building

56%

A minority of people (25%) would like to see the church used for other suitable purposes. Such events as concerts and flower festivals have already been held and we understand that the PCC would consider any proposals for appropriate events.
