Emergency, Environment & Other Services
The only service to receive a good report is the Fire Service with the Amory Centre, Schools and
Social Services being thought of as reasonable. However, many people felt youth resources,
recreational facilities, the Police and Benefits Office all offered a poor service.
The Recycling Centre was seen as good by most people, but they would like to see it open longer
hours. Road cleaning, verge maintenance, pavement cleaning is barely acceptable with the
management of derelict sites seen by over half as poor.
Of those who answered the question 66% said yes to CCTV. Where would you like the cameras? -
mostly everywhere. Square (287), South Street (125), Pannier Market (35) Car Park/Central Park
(26), East Street (94), Everywhere (55).
In reply to environmental problems, 518 of you think we do not have a problem and 528 think we do not! The most stated problems were dog mess (96), Caberboard (88), letter (28) and heavy goods vehicles (14).
Sport, Social & Entertainment
Most people showed support for some kind of activity and there also appear to be people willing to run them.
A swimming pool extension had the support of 716 people with park/open spaces, leisure complex being much the same. Skateboard, rollerblading and bike park were also popular.
Yes, we do need a multi-purpose Community Centre was the opinion of 71%, you would favour a brand new building but reasonable support was given to a converted one. You would like to use it for cinema, concerts, dances, exhibition, children's activities and as a meeting place.
The play recreational and social facilities you felt were not good for any age group and particularly poor for the 8 to 24 year age group.
Transport & Highway
Most of you felt the bus service was reasonable for route, reliability and cost. Timetabling left a bit to be desred whilst many of you stated you would like a later service each day and buses on Sunday.
Over 70% would like Queen Street to become one-way.
The Town Square would benefit by being left alone was the opinion of 53%. Although 26% would like it to return to parking - only 18% would like to see it pedestrianised.
Half of you would like to see additional traffic calming and half would not. Those of you who did would like to see it in the square and New Road.
From question 31 it was clear that most of you think verges need to be kept tidy and not damaged by vehicles, more footpaths need to be opened, and it was not necessary to remove pavement bollards.
