‘Other’ reasons included:

- Built on leylines (areas of peace and tranquillity);

- helps give sense of community/village life;

- bell ringing and

- the choir.

Over 40% of those who expressed an opinion think that the religious buildings should be used for other purposes, 31% thought it should not, whilst 28% had no opinion.

"We think it is important to maintain the standard of our Church yard, as it is an important part of our village."

"St. James is a visual delight and all aspects of the church, cemetery, walls and entrance should be jealously protected and maintained."

However, there were one or two strong opinions against using the buildings for other purposes.

The most frequently suggested changes that could be made to the church/chapel to enable it to serve the community better were:

- provision of kitchen and toilet;

- a full-time resident vicar;

- social functions.

Others suggested no changes.

The majority of comments that were made with reference to the possibility of the church/chapel falling into disuse were very strongly along the lines of very sad/disappointed/upset. Some people felt it would be an architectural loss.

"The community should be consulted on any changes that may be made to the church."

33 people (15%) shop in the village daily, 81 people (38%) shop in the village two or three times a week and 66 people use the shop weekly.

"I use the local Post Office as I do not like the rip-off supermarkets."

"Local shops and Post Offices are the focus of a community - use it or you’ll lose it!"

Post Box PictureHalf of respondents use the Post Office counter services less than five times a month. 9% never use the Post Office, whilst 35% use it between 5 and 10 times a month, and 6% use it more than 10 times a month.

94% (167 people) said that they would use the Post Office in the village to get their car tax if the facility was available.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES

Overall the opinion of services was generally good or reasonable. The District Nurse had 100% (of the 40 people who used the service) seeing it as a good service. Dentists were seen as a good service by 86 people (75% of those who used the service), with only 10% seeing the dentist service as poor. The opticians service was considered poor by 4 people (5% of those using this service).

From this table it seems that getting to an NHS Dentist and the chiropodist is proving to be causing most difficulty.

Police coverage is seen as good or reasonable by 43%, with 32% thinking it is poor, and 25% had no opinion.

39 people would like to see a mobile Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

It is impossible to sign on with a local NHS dentist - any that are available are over 15 miles away."

"The lack of public transport (and the poor timing of what is available) makes it very difficult to get to any of the medical services."

"It is difficult to and from Plymouth (hospital) when you are not allowed to drive after an operation."

"There needs to be more support for carers."
