119 households completed the questionnaire representing 245 people, whose age and gender is as follows:
The largest age group for both male and female is the 40 - 59 years group. Also of note is the small proportion of children/young adults living in the village. TABLE 1: Household size .
At present only three households have someone in need of alternative accommodation (seven people in total). Five of these people are in need now, one person will be in need in the next three years and one in 4 -10 years time. Of the three households in need now, two are already on the Housing Needs Register. "Limited building of new homes for local people at affordable prices, with sympathetic architecture to the village." "We need new young blood in this village. Rentals/ shared ownership homes could lead to a shifting community, whereas low cost homes for sale would encourage people to stay." The questions that relate to the information in this section were set by South Hams District Council - and the statistics and comments will be passed onto the relevant department .TABLE 2: Housing needs
The majority of those who expressed a need for more housing felt that it should be provided for local people. 67 people (32%) see a need for a residential/long term care home in Slapton. Of those who responded to the questionnaire only five households (4.3%) said that their Slapton residence is not their only residence (3 households declined to answer this question). 92% of respondents are permanently in residence in the parish. It is likely that there was no-one residing at many of the holiday/second home properties when the questionnaire was delivered. Of those responding 78% wanted second/holiday homes to pay full council tax. TABLE 3: Sewage disposal system used.
TABLE 4: Households affected by flooding
"There should be no new buildings in Slapton - current second homes are sufficient if available for resident occupation." ACTION NEEDED: Possible lobbying South Hams District Council re: Council/Business Tax on second properties. Review of water courses working with the Agencies responsible for flooding problems.
