South Brent Community Appraisal 1996

Section B - The Community Centre

The following chart refers to the question: "Do you support the idea of South Brent having a Community Centre?". A resounding 95% of people expressing an opinion, said "yes".

Support of Community Centre

When asked if the old school buildings would be the best place for a community centre, 89% of respondents expressing an opinion said "yes", as shown:

The alternative sites suggested were:

Village Hall38
Recreation Pavilion35
Old Station Site20
New Building18
Church Rooms13
Methodist Hall9

The more detailed survey into how often, and what people might want to use a Community Centre for, resulted in the following:-

The list below shows the 6 most popular services people said they would use "often" if provided:

Library49%(457people)
Fitness Centre30%(255people)
Adult Education21%(175people)
Meeting Place16%(140people)
Computer/IT Training14%(110people)
Youth & Under 5s11%(92people)

These services would also be used "occasionally" by similar numbers of people. Other "occasional" uses identified are for office facilities and a Community Cafe. It is quite clear that South Brent wants and should have a library. Every effort must be made to incorporate one in any scheme for the old school buildings. It has obvious benefits for all sectors of the community particularly for the school, people with young children and the elderly. We were surprised and pleased by the popularity of the idea of including a fitness centre/gym in the proposed community centre. This, like the library, could be a benefit to the community as a whole, across the age groups.

Provision for Adult Learning in South Brent

Existing provision for adult learning in South Brent is poor (over 60% of respondents stated this). Over 1000 people responded to the question asking if they would be interested in attending evening classes and 59% (620) people said they would - which cannot be ignored. There is clearly a very real demand. In total 1778 requests were made for the following subjects:

Arts/Crafts372Gardening197

Support was then asked for other possible uses and the table shows the number of people supporting each option:
