ENVIRONMENT

Refuse Collection

Many comments were received regarding refuse left on streets in plastic sacks and the consequent problem with seagulls. Holiday homes were seen as being especially difficult to deal with. We even received photographs as evidence of the problem.

419 people said that they occasionally or often had problems with refuse collection.

Recycling

This showed a mixed response concerning the facilities available.
504 felt they were satisfactory
372 felt they were not satisfactory

The most popular suggested improvements were:
Availability of skip
More frequent emptying of recycling bins
Plastic and cardboard recycling
Availability of composting scheme
A visiting community shredder was suggested to deal with garden refuse

Dog Mess

375 people expressed concern regarding dog mess. 265 would like to see woodchipped, fenced dog toilets at sites such as Batson.

Recommendation: This may well be worth an experiment.

Trees

559 people would like to see more trees planting around the town.

Police

776 people felt that an increased police presence was required in the summer. 295 felt the need between March and October and 121 felt increased presence was needed in the winter as well.

Closed Circuit Television Surveillance

1,086 people responded, 466 (43%) of whom felt CCTV would be helpful in deterring crime. However, 427 (39%) were opposed to this idea.

New Community Centre

There was not an overwhelming endorsement for a new centre. Only 209 said that they would use it often, although 679 thought they would use it occasionally. However, response was more enthusiastic regarding the various activities which could take place there e.g.

With this level of potential support for various activities, does this indicate greater viability for the project?

Recommendation: Perhaps local members of various clubs could combine to press this point.

Youth Facilities

781 people responded to this section with high levels of support for all activities listed (between 200 - 300 for each one).

773 people thought that the swimming pool should be covered and 534 people felt it should be combined with a new community centre at the top of the town.

446 people wanted a specific Youth Centre with teenage activities.

School

384 people (60% of those who answered this question) felt that the school was in need of refurbishment.

282 (54%) felt that a new school needed to be built. 235 people wanted a larger playground.

Sub-Post Office

644 people would like to see this facility at the top of the town and it was suggested that a post box was needed in the town centre.

Local Community Exchange of Skills Scheme (LETS)

147 people said that they would participate in such a scheme.

Recommendation: This looks like a practical number. Please contact Lynda Bates 843521.

Museum

919 people (a high figure) placed high or medium value on this facility. For any further information please contact Malcolm D’Arch on 843029.
