Rewe & District Community Appraisal Report 2000 Shopping People were asked where they did their shopping in order to ascertain whether a Community Shop would be viable. With regards to shopping at main supermarkets 105 (49%) said usually, 81 (38%) said always, 20 (9%) said occasionally and 10 (5%) said never.
With regard to using a Community Shop – 29 said they would use it daily, 97 weekly, 30 monthly, 48 less often and 21 said they would not use it. "We are aware that some people feel strongly that Rewe should ‘go it alone’. The reality of the situation is that local facilities are tending to be concentrated in Stoke Canon. (e.g. post office/pub/school). We need to accept the situation rather than seek to reverse it, because it is unrealistic & a waste of energy. We should be co-operating with Stoke Canon in looking at future development not competing" (Ed. comment – Yours is a valid point of view but at the initial public meeting when the appraisal process started the feeling of the meeting was that Rewe has different problems to Stoke Canon and that a separate appraisal process was worth undertaking to find out everyone’s views)
We asked how much people would be likely to spend weekly in a Community Shop and out of a total of 189 replies –
20 of those who responded said they would be interested in a financial share in a Community Shop.
We also asked if villagers would be interested in supporting LETS, a Local Exchange Trading Scheme and 70 (35%) said they would. Possible Solution – Any residents who are interested in a Community Shop could form their own group to evaluate this. The Steering Group has obtained information from other villages who re-instated a shop. "A community shop sounds like a good idea but our concern is that it would take custom from Stoke Canon post office/shop & affect its viability" (Ed. comment – a very valid point, maybe the proprietors of the Stoke Canon shop could be invited to have an involvement in a Rewe shop? We know Rewe’s previous shop closed about 12 years ago but other villages have been able to revive their shop so maybe it is worth considering) Local Government We asked if people would like more information on Parish Council activities and 138 said yes and 57 said no. On enquiring about satisfaction with the Parish Council spending of Council Tax Revenue – 56 were satisfied, 11 dissatisfied, and 157 don’t know.
We asked people for their opinion on the elected councillors’ awareness of local concerns and the response was as follows - Parish Council About half thought the Councillors were aware. District Council About a quarter thought the Councillors were aware. County Council About a fifth thought the Councillors were aware. "Latchmoor – How about a representative on the parish council?" "Council Representatives – could we be advised after elections who has got in via noticeboard at Latchmoor" "In Latchmoor council tax is high & there are no facilities, i.e. no street lights, no pavement, little or no control of traffic speed & volume" General Comments "I do hope that some positive steps are taken to enhance our community as a result of this questionnaire" "Why not leave Rewe as it is?" "At the moment Rewe is little more than a ribbon of housing along a main road. The village badly needs initiatives to pull it together to turn it into a community. I hope this questionnaire will help to fire people with enthusiasm, thereby resulting in positive outcomes" We hope you have found these findings interesting, and we look forward to seeing you at the Public Meeting on 23rd October 2000 [DF&F Main Menu] [Community Profiles Menu] [Community Appraisals Menu] [Top of Page] [Devon C.C.
