Rewe & District Community Appraisal Report 2000

Index

Environmental Enhancements

  • Again, there was considerable interest in these questions. 167 villagers would like to see the introduction of recycling facilities such as bottle, paper and clothing banks, whilst 131 would like to see the re-introduction of the District Council’s kerb side collection scheme. 155 thought that occasional skips for bulky waste would be an asset; it may be that, if publicised more widely, better use of the free EDDC Bulk Collection Scheme would negate this need.

Possible Solutions: Campaign for the introduction of recycling facilities at a suitable site in the village and/or lobby East Devon District Council for the introduction of the kerb side collection scheme – Green Boxes as in Stoke Canon.

"Community composting – an excellent idea – maybe a farmer could offer land?"

"I do like to have a few bonfires in the summer & should have the freedom to do so, but with due respect to neighbours safety & environment i.e. not burning painted treated wood or any unnatural product – plastics/tyres etc."

"Bonfire code should be more explicit – avoid sunny weekends, look for neighbours washing etc."

"Recycle banks – car park" (12 mentioned this)

"NOT the car park – somewhere with vehicle access where residents would not affected by the traffic/smells/litter/broken glass"

"Dog fouling in Green Lane"

"Create more bridleways for horses"

"Need to balance wildlife & roadside visibility / safety"

"While I would not like to see farmers spending time clearing roads rather than earning a living, I do feel that EXCESS mud should be removed from public highways"

Community Composting

  • Over two fifths of respondents (87 people) would like to see the introduction of a community composting scheme.

We understand that the CARE group has identified a suitable site and hopes to go ahead shortly.

Bulk Collection Scheme

  • Two thirds of respondents (159 people) were not aware of the free bulk collection service offered by East Devon District Council for the disposal of fridges, cookers, mattresses etc..

Possible Solution: Approach East Devon District Council with a view to achieving publicity for the Scheme.

Countryside Improvements

  • 154 people in Rewe felt that the planting of more trees was either very important or worth doing, and 72 felt that a Community Orchard would be an asset in the village.

Possible Solution: Investigate the possibility of securing suitable sites for tree planting, taking advantage of the Council’s free tree schemes, and the enthusiasm of the local Tree Warden!

  • 128 of residents felt that it was important to keep hedges neat and tidy, although 64 thought it was necessary to let them grow naturally.

Possible Solution: Encourage (Devon County Highways, farmers, householders) to trim hedges at an appropriate time of year.

"Vandalism at Latchmoor – Also at water authority plot by the bridge"

Footpaths and Bridleways

  • Nearly half of villagers knew the location of some of the footpaths in the locality, but only a quarter were fully aware of where they were, whilst 22% did not know where they were to be found.
  • 63% of people felt they were able to use the paths they knew of without difficulty, although nearly two thirds said they would not be prepared to assist with their maintenance, perhaps because they felt they were already adequately looked after.
  • Half of respondents felt existing footpaths were well signposted, with almost half being aware of the Exe Valley Way - although, by default, that means that the other half weren’t!
  • 171 (91%) people felt it would be useful to have a map of local footpaths, but only 115 were prepared to pay for them. Only around a third of people thought that guided walks of the area would be of interest.

"Ramblers" "They walk anywhere & have no regard for the working environment they intrude on"

Possible Solution: Investigate the possibility of securing sponsorship to facilitate the production of a leaflet showing the location of footpaths and their ease of use for different sectors of the community (e.g. those with special needs), available free of charge for all households

Road, Lane and Path Improvements

  • 169 respondents thought that it was important to remove litter from roads, lanes and footpaths, with 152 feeling it was worthwhile to keep verges tidy, although 80 thought verges ought to be left to grow naturally.

Possible Solution: Organise an annual "Clean Up The Village" Day.

  • Vehicle damage to verges was an issue, with over 81% of respondents thinking it was either important or worth doing something about.

Possible Solution: Lobby Devon County Council to provide more kerbs.

  • 91% of respondents felt pavements should be kept clear and around the same percentage thought it would be useful to signpost footpaths, repair gates and generally make footpaths more accessible.
  • About two thirds of people felt that more footpaths should be available.

Perhaps those people interested in environmental issues could get together with the CARE group to work for improvements.
