Introduction

Similarly to other villages in Devon, and with the backing of the Parish Council, a questionnaire was distributed to all households in the Parish of Rewe. Just over 80% were returned, and 254 parishioners took part.

About two thirds of the houses in the parish are occupied by 1-2 people, and the number of men and women are roughly equal. 70% have lived in the parish for 15 years or less, and around 20% of residents are aged 65 or over.

Of the people who replied:-

62%

live in

Rewe

16%

Upexe

10%

Latchmoor

9%

Heazille

3%

Other parts of the parish

Although a few people criticised the questionnaire, much positive feedback was received, and the steering group was pleased with the response. Residents of Latchmoor and Upexe generally ‘gravitate’ more towards Thorverton, while those from the Heazille Lane area tended to look towards Silverton, but nevertheless there was good feedback from these areas also.

The purpose of the questionnaire was not simply to confirm what most residents already knew, but to use the results of the analysis to start to systematically address those issues that are most important to the residents of the parish. So to be of real value, the major work of the exercise is still to come.

A PUBLIC MEETING
will be held in the Village Hall at 7.30pm
on Monday 23rd October 2000

All residents are invited to come along and discuss the results, prioritise action points, and decide who takes responsibility for which bit of the Report.

Comments in italicised, purple text are verbatim extracts from returned forms. Editorial comments or explanations in the main text are clearly marked. The steering group has indicated possible ways forward for some issues (dark red, italicised text) – all of which can of course be discussed at the public meeting.

The steering group would like to thank all those who took part in the survey, and for their time in completing the questionnaire. Thanks also to Devon County Council for printing and analysing the questionnaires, and to Rewe Parish Council, East Devon District Council, the County Council and the National Lotteries Awards Scheme for their financial support.

Also, a special thanks to C.A.R.E., the Community & Rural Environment group who started the whole thing up and without whose initiative the Appraisal would not have happened.

Finally, thanks to all those who attended meetings and helped with the distribution and collection of the Appraisal – many thanks.

Members of the Steering Group –

Paul Tomlinson (Chair)
Melanie McLoughlin
Guy Sheppard
Sally Salter
Janet Duke
