2. Housing

Before analysing the results of people's attitudes to house building, it is interesting to note the length of time respondents have lived in Rattery. 66% have lived in Rattery for under 15 years and 30 % between 16 and 50 years. In total, 9 people have lived in Rattery for over 50 years!

On the issue of house building, the appraisal asked 'Over the next ten years would you like to see the housing stock of Rattery increase?' The majority (47%) said 'NO', with 35% in favour and 18% having no opinion.

Of the 35% who voted 'YES' for more housing (representing 82 people)

  • 75% wanted housing for local people
  • 56% wanted housing for young people
  • 28% wanted housing for low income families
  • 20% wanted sheltered accommodation
  • 56%wanted the housing stock to increase by no more than 10 houses
  • 8% wanted an increase of over 30 houses

All respondents were then asked 'If there is to be development in the village, what would be most acceptable?

  • 63% would prefer infilling with single buildings.

Most people (51%) thought the number of houses built in Rattery over the last 10 years was 'about right', and 60% are totally or quite satisfied with 'the appearance of new buildings'.

Asked to comment on the quality of planning decisions made over the location and design of buildings, the vast majority of respondents (70%) thought that it was either good or reasonable. 4 people are in need of alternative accommodation now, and 10 people in the next 3 years.

RECOMMENDATION: To pass on the housing information to the Parish Council and the Planning Departments of the South Hams District Council and Devon County Council.
