ENVIRONMENT

Footpaths

The questionnaire asked whether the footpaths could be followed easily, and whether footpath maps should be put up. A third of you said that you could follow the footpaths in the village without any difficulty, although a quarter of you disagreed and thought that they were sometimes awkward to follow. Many of you (82%) thought that footpath maps were a good idea, as long as they were of good quality and displayed in an appropriate place within the village. It was also felt that direction signs and arrows on the footpaths themselves should be kept clear at all times.

One of the joys of "Life in the Country" should surely be the opportunity to walk and wander in the fields and lanes

Litter bins

Litter Bin GraphicTwo-thirds of the 365 respondents thought that Plymtree needs more litter bins.

Recommendations: The Parish Council should consider the erection of Footpaths Maps, in a durable format, near the footpath entrances. It should also consider placing litter bins in the centres of population.

Dog mess

Dog Walking PictureMany respondents felt strongly that this was a major problem in the village but, one that could be relatively easily solved. About a third thought that there should be more dog bins and scoops for dog owners to use. However, many others thought that dog owners themselves should be made to feel more responsible for their dogs by educating them as to the unpleasantness & dangers that dogs’ mess causes to people. 25% thought the prosecution of more offenders would act as a deterrent, with some suggesting that owners should be "named and shamed". Another idea was to actually ban dogs from certain areas such as the recreation ground and possibly have a designated "walking path" for dog owners.

Impose fines on the guilty dog owners with half going to the informant.

Take careless dog owners on a visit to the blind school.

Do farmers and ‘new’ villagers need to have a better understanding of each other?

Recycling topics

Recycling PictureMost people 294 (86%) would be willing to separate their refuse items. Of these 206 (60%) would prefer a roadside collection and 110 (32%) would use a static recycling site. When asked about composting schemes, a quarter would be interested in a home scheme, although 40% expressed interest in a community scheme.

Recommendations: Given the support for a community composting scheme (which can also raise funds for the operating group) the Gardening Club may care to investigate possible sites, and the economics of such a scheme.

Water quality

Water Quality Graph

Respondents were asked to grade the quality of the domestic water supply, and 362 people gave their views. 23 (6%) said it was ‘excellent’ while 86 (24%) said it was ‘good’ and 139 (38%) thought it ‘acceptable’, 83 (23%) said it was ‘poor’, and 31 (9%) considered it to be ‘very poor’.

Recommendation: The wide spread of views tends to indicate that the quality varies excessively in the parish; this needs examining.
