3. Services for Peter Tavy

Shop and Post Office

This subject generated a lot of interest from respondents to the question "Does Peter Tavy need a shop/Post Office?":

  People from
Langsford
People from
the Village
People from
Rural Area
Totals
Yes 18 49 43 110
No 1 2 3 6
No opinion 4 4 6 14

It seems pretty clear that most people throughout the parish would like to see a Post Office/Shop in the village.

Opinion is more divided over using a Mobile Post Office perhaps due to access problems and the times it could be available. There is an overall majority who would use it, but much less support for the idea from the rural area.

Yes (would use a mobile) 8 68 19 95
No (would not use) 9 21 28 58
No opinion 1 2 6 9

This was one of the topics which produced most comments in the open section at the end of the questionnaire.

The Things You Said...

- Peter Tavy needs a shop/Post Office!

- I think it is essential that the village shop should be restored.

- If a new shop were opened, a photocopier and fax would be useful as more jobs begin to - in part at least - be home-based.

- There should be Government-funded incentive schemes to set up village shops.

- The right to buy green top (unpasteurised milk) from local supplier should be reinstated.

- a shop in the village is . ..not only a convenient facility, but also a social focal point ... For those working outside the village, opening hours in the early evening would help to increase usage ... We'll be willing to help out if a new shop, were to be established.

- We miss the shop greatly. if someone should show interest in reopening a shop/Post Office, we would definitely support it and would be prepared to help out occasionally.

- We would like to see a shop or P0 in operation somewhere in some form in the village, perhaps run as a co-operative. We wonder if a space in Max's garage is an option?

- Pub seems to be a logical place for a small shop/Post Office!

- The small-side room [of the Village Hall] could be a village shop/PO.

- Unable to use [a mobile PO] during the week because at work.

The Parish Council

The questionnaire also asked people what they knew about the parish council. Nearly 18% of those who replied knew all 7 of the councillors, but 11.2% did not know any of them. On average, people knew about half of the parish councillors.

90 people - the majority of the 167 who replied- did not know how the parish council spent its money. Of those that did, 46 people were "totally satisfied" or "quite satisfied" about how the money was spent, but 15 people were dissatisfied, and 16 people had no opinion.

- Perhaps before the next Parish council elections, the candidates could hold a forum where they each give a small presentation as to what they would hope to achieve for the village if elected to the position of Councillor. I did vote at; the last election, but I felt it was a waste of time and I might as well have gone "eeney-meeney-miney-mo" down the ballot paper.

Information

Peter Tavy people were asked what they thought of the quality of information about what's going on in the parish, and they replied:

  People from
Langsford
People from
the Village
People from
Rural Area
Totals
Good 0 0 6 6
Reasonable 2 21 12 35
Poor 13 40 25 78
No Opinion 10 16 11 37

There are two main sources of information for the parish. The first is the Peter Tavy Piper magazine, which is very well read by people, as follows:

  People from
Langsford
People from
the Village
People from
Rural Area
Totals
Every Issue 9 78 58 145
Every 2-3 Issues 3 3 15 21
Less Frequently 1 3 7 11
Never 0 3 5 8

36 people said they would be willing to help with the Piper so we ought to be able to ensure it continues as a first-class local magazine!

The second main source of information is the parish noticeboard, situated next to the village hall gateway. Its clear from the figures below, showing the number of times people look at the board each month, that this isn't an easy source of information for people living outside the village.

  People from
Langsford
People from
the Village
People from
Rural Area
Totals
Look at Over 10 times a month 0 19 0 19
Look at 5 - 10 times a month 0 27 15 42
Look at Less than 5 times 6 28 16 50
Never look at it 7 12 22 41

Peter Tavy people were then asked where they thought the noticeboard should be located, which drew the following answers:

  People from
Langsford
People from
the Village
People from
Rural Area
Totals
In its Present Position 9 67 32 108
Beside the Telephone Kiosk 1 9 4 14
In Church Road 2 3 3 8
Other Position (see comments) 2 8 4 14

There were a lot of comments in favour of additional boards in rural locations:

- An additional place in Cudlipptown or other surrounding areas.

- How about another one at Langsford?

- Second board at Langsford

The Things You Said...

- Difficult, as we are 4 miles from the village and hardly ever drive through, as the easiest route is through Mary Tavy. We never know what is going on and perhaps may participate more if we did.

- [We read] every issue when we receive it.

Suggested alternative locations for a notice board:

- Beside the Peter Tavy Inn.

- Facing oncoming traffic entering the village near its present location.

- By seat on corner of Church Road.

- In front of ex-Post Office.

- Where it is easy to stop in a car to read it.

- Outside the garage.

- Where the fish and chip van parks.

Waste

There's a lot of support for waste recycling facilities. Numbers of people who said they would always or occasionally use them, if available, were as follows:

  No. of People
Bottle/Glass Collection Point 136
Waste Paper Collection Point 128
Can Bank 111
Separating Refuse for Collection 96
Community Compost Scheme 45

So we're generally very "green" minded, but most of us also seem to be keen gardeners, who want to hang on to our own compost for our own gardens!

The Things You Said...

- A mains sewerage system would be more healthy.

- We would like to see a feasability study for a reed bed sewage system for the village.

- I would like to think that in the not too distant future, mains sewerage will come to Peter Tavy.

Health Services

130 people use the Doctor often or occasionally, and 100 rate the service as good, 28 as reasonable, and only 2 as poor. Other medical services are used much less frequently, (the next most popular was the Health Visitor, with 18 users), and again the majority rate the services as good or reasonable.

There is some difficulty in reaching medical services, with over 15% of people saying that they had frequent or occasional problems in getting to the doctor, chemist, optician and hospital.

The Things You Said...

- Need NHS Dentist

- I have found on two occasions that the new doctor call-out system is flowed. I feel this could be very serious as the message handling service doesn't seem to pass the urgency of the message to the doctor on call.

Overhead wires etc.

Asked whether they would like to see overhead electrical and telephone wires replaced with underground cables, people replied:

  People from
Langsford
People from
the Village
People from
Rural Area
Totals
Yes 14 60 36 110
No 7 23 15 45

The Things You Said...

- I would be totally opposed to any decision to have street lighting or more overhead cabling.

- Street lighting is definitely not necessary!

- Two street lights: one at; Church junction and one at ex-Post Office for security and safety In winter months.

- Let's try to retain the older red telephone kiosk' let's resist BT introducing one of their modern city style kiosks.
