Peter Tavy Parish Appraisal
Report of the Results
March 1997
1. The Population of Peter Tavy
Don't forget - all these figures are based only on those people who replied to the relevant parts of the questionnaire, and reveal the picture in July 1996 - things may have changed since then!
The People who live here:
| Age Range | 0-4 | 5-10 | 11-16 | 17-21 | 22-39 | 40-59 | 60-64 | 65-74 | 75+ | Total |

| No. of Females | 10 | 8 | 9 | 3 | 25 | 27 | 5 | 16 | 24 | 127 |
| Total | 15 | 16 | 13 | 6 | 44 | 55 | 16 | 31 | 28 | 224 |
| Percentage | 6.7 | 7.1 | 5.8 | 2.7 | 19.6 | 24.6 | 7.1 | 13.8 | 12.5 | 100 |
As a graph, these figures reveal this picture:

There are more females than males in the parish, but it's generally a pretty good mix. There's quite a high proportion of middle-aged and older people, and it's interesting to see that there are only six people aged 17-21 in the parish.

Length of time people have lived in the parish:
So a good number of people have been living in the Parish quite some time!
Four people said that someone in their household had moved away because there was a lack of suitable accommodation in the village - and all of those people would like to return to the parish.
Peter Tavy Parish contains mainly small households. Most people in the parish live in households of one (19.8% of all respondents) or two (44.4% of all respondents) members. 14 households have four members, and there are also 6 households of 5 to 7 members.
The Things You Said...
"Peter Tavy is a friendly village, but community spirit is deteriorating due to too many outsiders moving in and not participating in village life."
Why people choose to live in Peter Tavy:
NB: People could tick more than one box in this section e.g. they may have been born here and love country life!
2. Recreation & Facilities in Peter Tavy
Opinions of the local facilities for play, recreation and social activities:

The majority of respondents do not see play, recreation and social facilities as good for any age group. Facilities for 8-14 year olds and 15-24 year olds are seen as particularly poor, which may become an increasing problem as numbers in these age groups grow in the next few years.
The Things You Said...
- We are pleased with the community spirit of Peter Tavy with Its lively fair, coffee mornings, playgroup, carol singing etc.
- Could maybe do with somewhere for young and old to gather in the village centre - for a cup of tea or coffee for example from the village hall...
- The church and chapel are valuable parts of the community - long may they continue to be so.
- Need more activities for youth.
- Need ... more things to do for entertainment for young people and older people like discos and more dance workshops and "Villages in Action"...
- We are thankful that the playgroup .. is growing. We understand that there is a club for older ones but wonder if more events could be organised for this age group.
-...We Would like to see [the mobile library] service continue.
-The "Minnows" playgroup seems a useful village facility and could always benefit from more equipment.
- More community events - not just arts and crafts.
- Need a friendly "local" pub as a community facility for locals and local groups.
The Children's Play Area
161 people replied to the question about the play area. 23 thought the facilities there were good, 67 said they were reasonable, and 18 felt they were poor. (53 had no opinion.) Not surprisingly, most people using the children's play area were from Peter Tavy village, rather than Langsford or the rural area.
- What children's play area?
- We are happy that; the playground is being expanded and would encourage more additions!
- Facilities getting better all the time!
The Village Hall
The response to the questions about the village hall suggest it's a very important topic for a lot of people.
Numbers of People using the Hall:
| People from Langsford |
People from the Village |
People from Rural Area |
|
| Over 10 times a month | 0 | 0 | 6 |
| 1 to 5 times a month | 2 | 21 | 12 |
| Infrequently | 13 | 40 | 25 |
| Never | 10 | 16 | 11 |
41 people often make use of the village hall (6 of them using it over 10 times a month!). 37 people never use it, and 78 use it infrequently. People from Langsford seem to use the hall least, but, surprisingly, people using it very frequently come in from the rural areas of the parish.
Although many people, from all parts of the parish, think that the hall is adequate for our needs, nevertheless 29 people feel that it is not adequate.
Those who thought is was not adequate made the following suggestions about improvements (listed below in the order of the number of times each topic was mentioned):
The Things You Said...
- The Village Hall is a brilliant asset we love it and use it a great deal. More storage space would be a great help to free up the side room.
- Initiatives such as 'Villages in Action" bring highly-qualified performers and workshops into the community and are welcomed and should continue. This should be built on, with more funds available to promote arts and crafts in the village.
- We hope "Villages in Action" participation continues because the events are excellent.
- I would consider using the Village Hall for workshops that I do if the heating was better over the winter
Several comments were also received voicing strong support for the "Villages in Action" scheme.
Tourism
163 people replied to the question about encouraging more tourism. 113 (69%) of these were opposed to the idea.
If there were to be more development, bed and breakfast or camping sites were the most popular suggestions followed by guest houses.
People were also asked whether there should be more information provided for visitors to the parish, and opinion was fairly evenly divided. 60 people thought there should be more, 61 people were opposed to the idea, (and 38 people had no opinion).
The Things You Said...
- It is a beautiful area which we feel would be ruined if it was developed more either by housing or tourist development.
- No increase in "Tourist Attractions". This was a rural parish, now cars, litter & people & noise are taking over from April to October.
- Information for day visitors [would] help support; the pub and a local shop/P0
- [We'd like] to remain a quiet retreat from the stress of life and not become crowded or too commercialised.
