Peter Tavy is a large rural parish of over 15 square miles (3,953 hectares), situated within the boundaries of the Dartmoor National Park, and lying on the western edge of the moor itself.
The Parish contains remains of settlements dating back to at least 4,000BC, but Peter Tavy was first mentioned in the Domesday survey of England in 1086. Today, the residents of the Parish are a broad spectrum of recent arrivals and long-standing residents, and totalled 349 at the 1991 Census.
Due to the size, and nature of the road system, each area of the Parish has its own individual problems and advantages. Therefore, this appraisal was carried out to determine the views of the parishioners and the best way ahead for the future.
Background
A steering group of parish councillors and residents was first set up in October 1995 to begin studying the opportunity of undertaking a parish appraisal in Peter Tavy. The appraisal has been totally funded by the Community Council of Devon,
Dartmoor National Park and Devon County Council, with support from West Devon Borough Council..
Using questions supplied by the Community Council of Devon, a questionnaire was devised, and people in the parish were notified about the appraisal.
A copy of the questionnaire was distributed to every household in the parish in July 1996, and these were collected a few weeks later. Out of 115 questionnaires sent out, a total of 81 households replied, (a response rate of over 70%), representing 224 individuals. The questionnaires were returned to the Community Council, who produced a preliminary statistical report of the findings in January 1997.
Using this preliminary report and further analysis of the survey results, the current report was compiled by members of the steering group and the Parish Council. The report presents the findings of the Appraisal in words and figures, and includes some of the comments people made
("The Things You Said...").In each section, the analysis is of course based only on those households who replied to the relevant questions, and reflects the situation in the parish in July 1996.
The Things You Said...
- Peter Tavy is a wonderful community to be a part of
- Peter Tavy Is a unique village retaining its charm through its traditional values and lifestyle. Modernisation would put an end to Its character, and every effort should be mode to resist it.
- We think Peter Tavy Is a great place to live.
- This [Appraisal] I find a total waste of time and money. Money would be spent more efficiently and better if local government (Parish Council) had more control.
- The locale need more say - we do not want to be dictated to by people who do not understand our way of life.
- Since the Parish Council knows better than any other organisation ... what to or would be beneficial for the Parish, the local council should have the sole right to decide what is, happening or should happen In the present and future In the Parish.
