"IS THERE A YOUTH CLUB OR "DROP-IN" CENTRE IN YOUR AREA?"

70% (476) young people know they have access to a youth club in their home area.

However, only 41% (196) of these actually chose to use this.

Leaving 59% (280) of those who are aware of a facility choosing NOT to use it.

WHY?

There will always be some young people who are just not youth club/centre users but the question "Are youth clubs just catering for the junior age group?" needs to be asked. Whilst it is obviously important to offer the under 12’s a social facility, it is equally important to consider what will attract and interest the 13+ age range.

Why not do some research in your own communities to try and find out what young people in the 13 - 19 year age band would like.

‘After all we ALL need somewhere to get together and socialise with our friends!!’

"DOES YOUR AREA HAVE SOMEWHERE UNDERCOVER OUTSIDE (I.E. A SHELTER) WHERE YOUNG PEOPLE CAN MEET?"

Less than ONE THIRD know of such a place in their area.

Leaving 462 young people either NOT AWARE of, or NOT HAVING, such a

meeting place.

61% of young people WOULD LIKE an undercover meeting place.

Areas highlighted by the appraisal as having NOWHERE to use, or go, include:

Lydford

Bridestowe

Sourton

Sampford Courtenay

Also large numbers of young people from:

Okehampton

Hatherleigh

North Tawton

South Zeal

Chagford

experience problems with accessing a suitable undercover shelter as a meeting place.

‘Remember we ALL like to hang out somewhere with friends!!’

Recommendations to these first two questions-

  • PLEASE find ways of including the views of young people when planning/developing projects in your community.
  • PLEASE find ways of making any existing facilities more young people user friendly, and appropriate to the needs of the different age groups.
  • THINK about joining forces with neighbouring villages/areas to provide shared facilities.
  • NOT EVERYTHING costs a fortune, outside shelters can be provided quite cheaply.

FUNDING IS AVAILABLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLES PROJECTS.

"ARE YOU INTERESTED IN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES?"

(More than one box could be ticked)

Just over TWO THIRDS of young people (435) wanted more of these activities to be available.

Most young people (93%), regardless of sex or age, would like any activities to be for BOTH sexes.

The most popular times for activities to take place are weekends and holiday times, although 53% would like after-school and evening opportunities.

Recommendations:

  • Involve the young people in YOUR area, and look at how you can bring more activities into YOUR communities.

  • Liaise with organisations such as:
    • Community Education Youth Service (Okehampton)
    • O.C.R.A (Okehampton Community Recreational Association)
    • "Time Out Travel"(Travel club for young people- Okehampton)
    • Local sports groups
    • And of course, Okehampton Teens to Twenties
  • Use your local Community Volunteer Service (C.V.S.) for help locating suitable funding or support.
  • Why not try and find an interested adult from your village/community to become a local "MINISTER for YOUTH", someone who would work with your young people and liaise with many organisations that are able to offer help in improving/developing services and projects for young people in rural areas.
