Hi!
Hopefully the information available in this report will provide us all with a fuller understanding of the social and recreational needs of young people within our community. Just to remind you, ‘Okehampton Teens to Twenties’ Community Youth Council was launched in November 1998. Its main aim is to improve and increase opportunities for the young people of Okehampton and its catchment area. As a group we decided the best way to learn the real wants and needs of young people was to ask as many as possible. Sounds obvious doesn’t it! But it wasn’t something that had happened on such a grand scale before in this area. So we feel we have been responsible for achieving a little piece of history. The format for the questionnaire was kept straightforward with tick boxes provided for the individuals appropriate response. The personal part gave us the gender, age and living area of each person answering and we hope you will agree has allowed for a good cross section of young peoples opinions. So as I said at the beginning "now we have some answers" which I am sure will be of enormous use to you, your organisation and your community in developing future opportunities for the young people in your area. Thank you very much for your interest in this report. I would also like to thank Okehampton Area Youth Forum, West Devon Borough Council and Okehampton Community Recreation Association for their financial contributions and the Community Council of Devon for all their guidance and support in making this appraisal possible. BUT! Most of all I would like to thank each and every person aged 10 – 20 years who took the time to fill in the questionnaire. THANK YOU
DANIEL Chairman OTT. Our young persons Appraisal asked for 23 questions to be answered, this included 6 questions directed at those people aged 16 years and over. Below is the personal breakdown of the young people who completed the appraisal questionnaire. SEX: MALE - 355 FEMALE - 332
A very equal gender balance and a good cross section of the broad age range targeted. 41% (276) people lived in the Okehampton area, the remaining 411 living in the following villages/communities.
The following pages show the questions, which were asked, the young peoples responses, our comments and recommendations.
