Employment

The survey had a response of 203 in respect of the analysis requested.

  • Employed - 70
  • Self-employed - 35
  • Unemployed - 7
  • Government training - 1
  • Total - 113 (56%)

  • Full time education - 26 (13%)
  • Retired (wholly) - 45 (22%)
  • Unwaged - 12 (6%)
  • Sick/disabled/other - 7 (3%)

    The main place for paid work shows the following:

  • At home - 28 people (24%)
  • Elsewhere in the Parish - 13 people (11%)
  • within 10 miles of the Parish - 53 people (45%)
  • Between 10 and 30 miles - 18 people (16%)
  • Over 30 miles - 5 people (5%)

    A total of 8 people are actively seeking paid work representing 7% of the total respondents.

    Self Employment

    Whilst only 35 people responded as Self-employed people, a total of 42 businesses were registered as follows:

  • Agriculture - 15
  • Professional services - 9
  • Retail/repair - 8
  • Construction - 4
  • Manufacturing - 2
  • Hotel/catering/tourism - 2
  • Services/other - 2

    This can be summarised as 50% production and 50% services.

    The intention of becoming self-employed is stated by 6 people. However, 18 people see considerable difficulties becoming self-employed citing a combination of 7 'lack of' reasons.

  • Premises - 7
  • Technical skills - 5
  • Confidence - 3
  • Other issues - 2

    Training

    A high figure of 89 people expressed an interest in vocational training citing a combination of 7 different need indicators:

  • New technology/computing - 47 out of 89
  • Skilled/craft related - 40
  • Rural/agricultural skills - 10
  • Professional/managerial/supervisory - 19
  • Clerical/secretarial - 11
  • Technical - 11
  • Other - 13

    Housing

    Of the 201 people who responded on this issue, 119 (59%) expressed the need for housing, prioritised as follows:

  • Housing for local people - 77 out of 119 (65%)
  • Housing for young people - 55 (46%)
  • For low income families - 37 (31%)
  • Family housing - 22 (18%)
  • Housing for the elderly - 21 (17%)
  • Other housing - 13 (11%)

    The remaining respondents were 25% in favour of NO MORE HOUSING and 16% NO OPINION on the issue. However it was clear respondents were split on the issue of whether new housing would spoil the Parish.

  • Yes it would - 44%
  • No it would not - 39%
  • No opinion - 17%

    13 households indicated a need for alternative accommodation as follows:

  • Now - 2
  • Next 3 years - 10
  • Over 3 years - 1

    The majority of these important cases are for rented accommodation
