Meldon Parish Hall Appraisal

Tourism

Back Packer Picture Although 80% of workers in the area (192 in total) are not involved in tourism, a sizeable majority of 133 people (59%) would support and encourage more tourism. Over half of us would like to see more overnight accommodation for tourists

Action: Tourism is important in our area and we will pass your comments on to the Dartmoor National Park Authority as well as the Parish Council.

Health and Social Services

Doctor PictureVery few of us seem to use the Social Services in the area. Only Home Help and Meals on Wheels were rated as mainly poor (but by 3 respondents each). The doctor was most used, with 114 people (61%) finding the service good and a further 62 (33%) rating it as reasonable. Few of us seem to have trouble getting to Hospital or Doctor, but almost one-third (49 people) said they had trouble often or occasionally reaching a NHS dentist (there being no NHS provision in Okehampton).

Action: Your comments on Health and Social Services mostly relate to facilities in Okehampton itself. There is little provision in the local area. However, those wishing to visit a NHS dentist are finding it increasingly difficult to find one. We will pass your comments on again to the local Health Authority and the local Councils.

Environment

House PictureProtecting the countryside is considered to be the responsibility of "all of us" according to 84% of respondents, (203 people) with help coming from Local Authorities, Landowners and Farmers. Improvements in visual appearance was laid at the door of "tidying up unsightly buildings" (73% or 170 people) and keeping verges tidy (68% or 159 people). Others would like to see more tree and flower planting.

Action: The number of people expressing concern with untidy buildings and road verges should alert local authorities to the fact that there is a problem in our area which needs attention. The West Devon Borough Council and Dartmoor National Park Authority should take steps to positively encourage people to make the most of unused and dilapidated buildings. They should also place more emphasis on tidy roadside verges and encourage the planting of trees and flowers. We will make sure the authorities are made aware of your concerns in this area.

New Village Hall

There was overwhelming support (224 people) for the construction of a new Village Hall, preferably on the same site as the existing building. Only 3% (6 people) were against having a new hall, with a further 13 having no opinion.

New Hall Pie Chart

Barn PictureMost of you (182 people or 78% of respondents) would also support a camping barn being attached as walking and cycling in this area is increasing in popularity. This idea was initiated as a means of attracting additional funding for the construction of a new hall. As already outlined, Meldon village is the meeting point of a number of tourist related routes, including the West Devon Way, Meldon Reservoir, the future Sustrans Cycle-way and is a convenient location from which to explore the north-west side of Dartmoor.

Action: We are already putting into place the plans necessary to apply for grants from various sources in order to construct a new village hall. This appraisal will assist this process. All local authorities, including the Dartmoor National Park Authority will be made fully aware of your views on relevant topics.
