Meldon Parish Hall Appraisal

Okehampton Hamlets Parish consists of a number of small overlapping communities surrounding the town of Okehampton. Meldon is the hamlet on the Western side of Okehampton and is situated on the edge of Dartmoor. It is attracting more visitors each year, being on the approach road to Meldon Reservoir, offering a good deal of scope for the popular pastimes of horse riding and walking. The West Devon Way also passes through the area as does the route of the newly proposed Sustrans Cycle Route which is expected to come from Okehampton via the old railway line, through Bluebell Wood, across Meldon Viaduct and head south towards Tavistock.

Historic interests include old lime kilns and pit, the Granulite Quarry (disused), early production centres for green glass, old metal mine workings, and the Victorian iron railway viaduct which is a National Monument.

Within Okehampton Hamlets, Meldon has the only Community Hall which was built in the 1920’s using locally raised funds. Its construction is of a timber frame with galvanised iron roof and walls. In recent years it has become very expensive to maintain but has been kept going by the fund-raising activities of the Hall Committee. Unfortunately the hall now requires substantial improvements which would cost more than the income of the hall could provide for. With this in mind, the Hall Committee decided to look into the possibility of obtaining funding to replace the existing building with a new one for the use of the whole community well into the 21st century.

In March 1997, with the help of the Community Council of Devon, an Appraisal Questionnaire was drawn up in order to seek the views of local people on local services and the level of support for a new hall.

The Appraisal Working Committee delivered 170 copies of the appraisal to households around the area. A substantial effort on the part of the committee led to a total of 111 households responding (65% of the total) to the questionnaire, giving us a representative view of the wishes and needs of us, the local people.

The results have been analysed by the Community Council of Devon and we wish to express our gratitude to the Council for their support and encouragement in this project. The appraisal has been given financial assistance from the Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council, the Dartmoor National Park, West Devon Borough Council, Devon County Council and the European Objective 5b Fund and we thank all those organisations for their support.
