THE PARISH SPEAKS - Environment

Disturbances
The three most significant disturbances were low flying aircraft, traffic noise and hunting.

Other disturbances identified by respondents included:
Mud on roads, tractors and farm smells.

"More trees left in the hedgerows to grow to full size"
"Chapmans Well is a unique piece of Common Land"

‘Clean Up Milton Damerel Day’
129 people were prepared to take part in a ‘Clean Up Milton Damerel Day’.

98 people said they would volunteer for environmental improvement schemes, who are they?

Recommendation:
To be considered at Village Appraisal Meeting.

Recycling
278 (92%) of people would be prepared to separate their refuse for recycling purposes and 223 (75%) thought there should be a recycling facility within the community.

Sites suggested were Parish Hall Venn Green and Chapmans Green lay-by.

Recommendation:
Decide if a shed should be provided and to inform Torridge District Council of the result.

Concern was shown about the condition of roadside verges. Keeping them mown and tidy and reducing vehicle damage was a priority.

THE PARISH SPEAKS - Sports and Social Clubs

Forming clubs for sporting activities
All activities except Billiards and Judo had an adequate level of support and all activities had a volunteer to help run the activity.

Interest in clubs

The five most supported activities were:
78 for a social club (however there was nobody volunteering to organise this activity).
73 for a gardeners club
60 for a rambling club
45 for painting and drawing
43 for photography

"Most clubs and facilities are aimed at the older generation"
"The parish ought to hold more events to try to attract younger people into the parish"
"Many activities would be difficult in the Parish Hall - insufficient height for badminton, billiards would need a removable table"

Classes and clubs -
French (modern languages), Music, gardening, cooking, sewing, music, history, photographic, gardening (classes), dancing (classes), rugby, sheep shearing, Ice skating.

THE PARISH SPEAKS - Health & Social Services

Good Neighbour Scheme
32 people would consider helping weekly with a good neighbour scheme. A further 21 would assist monthly and 140 people would support such a service occasionally.

Recommendation:
Village Appraisal meeting should consider funding a Good Neighbour Scheme Group.

Need for a mobile NHS dentist

152 People considered that a mobile NHS dentist was needed monthly in the parish, feelings were very strong on this comment.

17 people had problems collecting medicines.

Recommendation:
Could possibly be dealt with by a Good Neighbour Scheme. Also to report to North Devon Health Authority regarding Mobile Dentist.

A newsletter/magazine

106 people thought the level of information on activities in the Parish was poor. However, 126 considered information to be good/responsible.

169 people considered the Parish needed a newsletter. A good level of support for producing a newsletter was recorded.

Recommendation:
To be considered at Village Appraisal Meeting, (possibility of grant aid being made available for this exercise).

THE PARISH SPEAKS - Law and Order

Neighbourhood Watch Scheme
215 people considered the Parish should have a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, with 161 persons willing to join.

"Is there any police coverage - we never see any"
