SPORT, SOCIAL AND ENTERTAINMENT Interestingly enough, there was sufficient interest expressed for all the sports itemised to warrant the formation of a club, provided always that the ticks were from possible active members and that there is a small group of people willing and able to set up an action committee for their chosen sport (this is critical!).
It will come as no surprise that there was great support for the provision of a football pitch in the parish. There were 456 opinions (53%) expressed in favour - it is an interesting thought that there were just 145 male respondents in the 11-39 age range! The two facts above give a sense of added urgency to the priority identified by the Parish Council to search for suitable space. Linked to the above is the more general question of youth facilities in Marldon. Indoor facilities to meet were rated as Reasonable/good 43% 324 people Number of Responses: - Outdoor ‘All Weather’ Play Areas Indoor Meeting Place Question 20 (which clubs would you like to see formed?) again produced a large number of replies and again it would appear that all the itemised suggestions received enough support to warrant the formation of a club, although once again it needs a small, keen group of supporters to put in the initial effort to start off a club.
There is already an active Rambling group in the village, a very successful Pantomime group (Drama?), a fortnightly Luncheon Club, and an occasional Marldon Singers group. 90% (599 people) of those offering an opinion on question 21 felt that there should be a children's adventure playground. The Parish Council is committed to this idea and is researching siting and equipment. It may not be quite so well known but the Village Hall Council has some money set aside in a separate account for this project when the Parish Council is finally able to announce a proposed site. It is obviously important that any potential site should be fairly central and in good view. An examination of the following table bears out most of the specific points made already. Respondents’ Opinions of Local Play, Recreational & Social Facilities
It is only the 60+ who think that facilities in Marldon reasonably satisfy their needs! COMMENTS FROM THE APPRAISAL‘Swing park could do with up-grading to an adventure playground of sorts but keeping in mind the younger children (toddlers) and older children, so making a play area for all ages.’ ‘Not a football pitch as such, but somewhere where children can play ball games in safety – Torfield is too isolated, the meadow reserved for cricket.’ Facilities in the village are totally inadequate. There is nothing for children under 12. There is a Youth Club once a week for over 12’s but this needs an injection of cash to be able to provide decent equipment for the children to use and to be able to run at least twice a week, once being a Disco.’ BUS SERVICE Half the respondents do not use the bus service. Most of those who do use the buses (387 – 76%) are satisfied with the route, a slightly lower percentage being satisfied with the timetable and reliability. The chief criticism is of the costs, 60% of respondents using the services rating them "poor", which one takes to mean expensive. Comments presumably relate to the existing service and there was no opportunity to comment on other needs. COMMENTS FROM THE APPRAISAL‘We need a more regular bus service to Torquay, earlier and later times. The Paignton bus needs to run later at night.’ ‘We could do with cheaper bus fares to Paignton from Marldon. It is cheaper to get to Torquay, we cannot understand why.’ Comments: There is a regular service between Paignton, Torquay and Marldon, but none to Newton Abbot or Totnes. Compton and Westerland are not served at all. The evening timetable is much sparser than the daytime and begins early (about 5.30pm from Paignton). We understand that there is some interest in the provision of a bus to Compton Castle when it is open, and this could be explored further to see if it would be of help to Compton residents. CAR PARK 50%, 483 people, expressed the need for another car park, whilst 26% (244) were not in favour. Some support was given for all sites, but most favoured is near the Village Hall (387 people, 82% of responses to this question). Respondents were able to opt for more than one site if they thought it appropriate. COMMENTS FROM THE APPRAISAL‘The parking facilities at the shops at Marldon Cross Hill are insufficient and do cause problems….hazards caused by car users when collecting children from the school….parking of larger vehicles in residential areas should be investigated.’ ‘Outside the school, parking is a disgrace. One day there will be an accident.’ ‘Please do your utmost to put in traffic calming devices in Compton, e.g. as Kingskerswell. We have had several animals killed or injured – how long before a child or an elderly person is involved in an accident?’ ‘Traffic calming measures are needed in Furzegood as cars go along this road too fast and there are a lot of young children playing in the street. Signs are also needed to warn motorists of the children’s presence, both here and in other parts of Marldon.’ DANGER SPOTS There is good support for action on all the suggested danger spots, (Marldon Cross, Westerland, School, Compton Village, Kiln Cross) but mostly for Marldon Cross (638, 80% of respondents), followed by the School (516, 65%). 135 (17%) would support action at "other" sites, including Vicarage Hill, Furzegood, Farthing Lane junction, Five Lanes and Churscombe Road.
