EDUCATION The responses in the education section show that 234 people are interested in some vocational training now or in the future; this represents 25% of those who responded. The most popular area for training was related to the new technologies, such as computing (121 people). 75 people would like skilled/craft training, and 58 people want professional/managerial training. Perhaps an indication of the changing times we live in was the low figure of 26 people interested in rural/agricultural training. COMMENT FROM THE APPRAISAL‘Develop a computer club where IT can be carried out and opportunities can be provided for people to become familiar with and proficient in computer techniques, software packages, and typing proficiency, including DT publishing and CV preparation etc.’
94% (213) people can get to Paignton as a training centre Recommendation: Undoubtedly, the availability of public transport is a contributing factor here. Consideration could be given to the provision of special transport to a Training Centre if a special course was set up.
LOCAL COUNTRYSIDE AND ENVIRONMENT There was a lot of interest expressed on this section. 162 persons stated that they were prepared to be involved as a volunteer with environmental improvement schemes, and 37 of them returned green slips. Some of these replies were from those already involved in the Parish Council's Environment Group and it is likely that others will soon be contacted. Anyone wishing to follow up an interest can make contact with Councillor Angela Cox (tel. 553846). All the landscape features itemised as needing protection received considerable support. Not surprisingly in view of the continuing publicity given to the "Ring Road controversy", Westerland Valley protection was supported by 595 people (78%) but the "Green Belt" between Torbay and South Hams received most support of all, 666 ticks (87% of responses). Both of these high counts give added strength to the valiant efforts being made by the Parish Council on behalf of the Parish. 495 people (55%) felt there was a need for a Parish Map Project. COMMENTS FROM THE APPRAISAL ‘The car is the main threat to the community. We need to encourage people to walk and cycle more with more cycle paths, footpaths etc.’ We need a Dog Warden in Marldon. As I do not drive I walk around Marldon and I am fed up with avoiding Dog Mess on the pavements and continually having to check my children’s shoes. It is worse in the winter as the children and I cannot see what we are walking on as the street lighting in Marldon is poor.’ ‘No more dreadful street lights please. There is already too much light pollution.’ Conclusion You will be pleased to learn that a group has already formed to carry out the Parish map idea. Details can be read in the Parish Magazine (published monthly and on sale in the Post Office, general stores and garage) or again by ringing Councillor Angela Cox (tel. 553846). The group hopes to have the map finished as a Millennium Project. HEALTH & SOCIAL SERVICES Prescriptions 96 people (10%) said they do have problems collecting prescriptions, enough to consider setting up a service, perhaps with a local pharmacist and/or taxi service.Services On the whole those expressing an opinion on this section consider the services they receive generally good. Only a small percentage thought the services poor. The least popular was "meals on wheels" where only 2 out of the 11 expressing an opinion thought the service good - 5 thought it poor, and 4 felt it reasonable. Mental Health and the Care Manager were reported as poor by 29% (5) and 25% (3) respectively. COMMENTS FROM THE APPRAISAL ‘Doctor, one hour weekly. It takes two buses to Foxhole…..or walk!!’ ‘To get to Torbay Hospital, you have to catch two buses. It would be nice if there was a direct service.’ ‘I would just like to say that we need a Health Centre. It would benefit everyone.’ ‘The doctors and dentists in Paignton seem only to have practices in the town rather than purpose built out-of-centre facilities including parking.’ ‘I do not drive and when I have to get a sick child to the doctor it is a bus ride and a long walk away, also when I need a prescription made up…..WE NEED A CHEMIST IN MARLDON.’ Recommendation: Although the numbers are small, they are nevertheless worthy of investigation. As we understand it the meals on wheels service is neither run nor administered by Social Services now. A person requiring meals on wheels can obtain a list of private establishments, such as retirement homes, who provide the service, from which they choose their own supplier! Nevertheless, Social Services should be aware that there is dissatisfaction. Difficulty getting to Hospital/Doctor etc. Most people can get to the services they need. However, 147 people have difficulty getting to hospital (34 of these often) and a similar number have difficulty getting to their doctor (146), chemist (135), dentist (121), and optician (79). There were some people in every instance who encountered difficulty. Conclusion Some solutions may be found in:
Recommendation: There is scope here for someone to act as a co-ordinator. COMMENTS FROM THE APPRAISAL ‘The most important thing that needs to be done in the village is for the growing number of children to have activities to channel their energies…children 10-18 years old have been in the Meadow worse for wear from alcohol…. Groups at night hanging around the school kicking footballs into the road… it is extremely dangerous. Marldon is a lovely village, let’s keep it that way. The Parish Council has fought long and hard to keep Torbay out. Don’t let’s spoil it ourselves.’ ‘Marldon is a lovely village to live in. Lack of local policing and a lot of people coming in from outside the area cause some social problems. More good clubs and activities for younger people would help, and even keep the young people in the village. There has to be a balance of age groups to keep the village alive and viable.’
