INTRODUCTION

WHAT WAS IT?

It was an attempt to find out the views of as many as possible of the people who live in Marldon Parish (including Compton, Marldon, Westerland, outlying homes and farms). Your views were requested on the future needs and developments of Marldon. The information will be of value to the Parish Council in all its future deliberations for quite a few years to come.

WHY MARLDON?

It was not just Marldon! 41 villages in Devon have also carried out appraisals (21 have already reported). The information gathered has been very useful to their Parish Councils and other local organisations when planning for their futures.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN?

With substantial help from the Community Council of Devon (CCD), a sub-committee of the Village Hall Council (including Parish Councillors and members of the Village Hall Council) drew up the questionnaire which was delivered to every household in Marldon. Completed questionnaires were collected (mostly in sealed envelopes) and passed to the CCD for analysis. The findings are now summarised in this report and could form the basis of Community Action Plans, with recommendations for future action based upon what you want. Every household should have received a copy of this report.

WE GOT YOUR HELP!

This was an opportunity for all persons in the Parish aged 11 and over to say what they thought. Too often people think or say that "they" (Parish Council, District Council, County Council, planners etc) do things that the general public disapprove of, or don't do things that the general public would like done. Your views, summarised in this report, will clarify and inform Parish Council deliberations as to what you do and don't want to see in this Parish.

REPLIES TO ORIGINAL QUESTIONNAIRE

All replies were anonymous and confidential. The replies were returned directly to CCD. Some questions asked if you would like to take part in projects or activities. To preserve your anonymity and to allow you to register interest a tear-off form was provided at the back of the questionnaire. Having been summarised by CCD the replies have been returned to the Appraisal Group. As they are unsigned and now in mixed order, individual replies are still confidential but specific comments and/or suggestions are available to the Appraisal Group. Some comments are included in blue italics within the Report. Recommendations are in red italics.

COMMENTS FROM THE APPRAISALS

‘Marldon is an island of peace, friendship and community spirit unknown in and around Torbay and the South Hams, it should not be lost by social pressures from outside. Please keep Marldon a village, the school small, but improve the social life of our children. PLEASE HELP REDUCE THE SPEED OF TRAFFIC ON MARLDON CROSS HILL, soon a child from the school or a parent will either be hit or killed there, or at the shops at the top of the road. Speed humps or traffic calming are urgently needed.’

‘Please note that those of us who work full-time cannot attend any activities until after 7pm.’

‘Thank you for creating the chance to have our say.’

QUESTIONNAIRE

The questionnaire was divided into two main sections: Household and Personal.

Part 1 - Household

492 households, containing 1125 people, completed this section, questionnaires having been delivered to 810 households = 62% return. The majority (89%) live in Marldon, with 5% each from Compton and Westerland, and 1% living elsewhere in the parish.

Part 2 - Personal

973 persons completed this section, an average of 2 persons for each household completing the questionnaire.
