Milton Abbot Village Appraisal Report 1998 PARKING 58 people (53%) have parking problems often or occasionally, the main problems being outside the Village Hall (24 people), outside the Church (10 people) and residents parking behind the church (11 people). Of these 36 people (67%) would support designated car parking spots, and 35 people (65%) want to resite the phone box. ‘Car park for residents at top of allotments’ ‘Parking outside village hall’ ‘Parking for Post Office and shop and a little car park for school’ TRAFFIC This is a very important issue for the village - 127 out of a possible 133 (95%) answered these questions. Vehicle speed (94%), parking by the phone box (64%) and the size of lorries (58%) seem to be the most important issues. Some kind of through-traffic measures were requested by 119 people. Speed of traffic and visibility outside the Village School were seen as priority problems - 77% being in favour of a slower speed limit along this stretch of road. ‘A great number of households are two car’ ‘Sleeping policemen and chicanes’ ‘Speed limit up beyond school’ ‘Two way traffic on main road, one way traffic down Venn Hill where parking is a serious hazard’ NOTE: This aspect has now been addressed by D.C.C. Highways, and the 30mph limit outside the Village School has been extended. Action Plan: Approach Roads concerning a one way system around church, and a parking bay at the phone box. BUS SERVICES 37 people who replied use the bus services, but 55 more would be encouraged to use it if the service was improved, especially if a more frequent service were to be introduced. Only 3 of these people use the bus to travel to work, but 29 use it for shopping, and 21 for social and leisure activities. 40 people would like additional buses to Tavistock, 31 to Plymouth, 23 to Launceston, 12 to Okehampton, and 19 to Exeter. ‘Emergency vehicles would have great difficulty in getting through at school closing time. School bus and parents reluctant to move’ ‘Occasionally a great deal of mud and sludge left on road at times – tractors going too fast at times’ ‘Pavement widened to increase safety on walk to school, and outside the village hall’ ‘8:00 to 8:30 am and 6:00 at Tavistock, so I can get to/from work. If I knew which buses were going to any destination and the times they left Milton Abbot it would be very helpful as I can’t walk to the shop noticeboard’ ‘BUS, I would use it for work if it came at a better time. I use it when I don’t have a car for shopping, school’ ‘I used it to get to Okehampton. Used when car is in garage. Buses don’t start early enough to get to work’ VOLUNTARY TRANSPORT SERVICE 24 residents are willing to provide a voluntary car/transport system, and 22 would use it for a nominal payment, 7 if it was free. It seems, therefore, that it might be worth setting up such a scheme. STREET LIGHTS Opinion is evenly divided on this issue: 46% think there are sufficient, 30% say not enough, and 24% have no opinion. ‘Low power ‘village style’ lights to enhance visual aspect of village’ ‘Street lights from the green’ ‘The road down to Vicarage Gardens, with the overhanging trees the road is darker than usual’ ‘Much too bright; lights in the street not the sky’ [Previous Page][Index][Next Page] [DF&F Main Menu] [Community Profiles Menu] [Community Appraisals Menu] [Top of Page] [Devon C.C.
