Milton Abbot Village Appraisal Report 1998 SERVICES Great enthusiasm was expressed for the services we have in the village. 98% of those answering this questionnaire (121 people) use the Post Office, 93% (115 people) use the shop, and 43% (53 people) use the pub. What we have we use! This reflects the view that we either 'use it or lose it'! ‘A delivery service by the shop for people who cannot walk there’ ‘Lottery machine, Tax Disc’ ‘SWEB key meter service’ ‘Cash machine and recycling banks for paper and cans’ VISITORS Milton Abbot would welcome more visitors to the village -73 people (59%) were in favour, whilst only 24 people (19%) did not want more visitors. 79% felt the village ideal for walkers and ramblers, 59% for photography and painting, 55% nature study, and 44% wanted farm visits. Other activities supported are shown below.
‘Farm visits or trails – are land owners willing to do this?’ ‘New public footpath signs’ ‘Don’t mind, but don’t want any other activities’
VILLAGE HALL & SUPPORTING FACILITIESUse of the Hall Of the 122 people who replied to this question, 71 (58%) rarely or never use the Village Hall, 39 people (32%) use it between 1 and 5 times a month and 12 (10%) use it more than 5 times a month. Nearly half (48%, 63 people) think the Village Hall is inadequate for the present/future needs of the parish, including those who never use it! 79% (103 people) would like to see it improved, though opinion is divided over whether we need a new hall - 61 people (55%) would help, and 49 people (45%) would not. ‘ Where is the money coming from to build the ‘new hall’, when it is a job to raise the money to keep the old one going’‘The general turnout in the village to support events is very poor’ ‘Would very much support the refurbishment of the village hall’ ‘Elections and coffee mornings’ ‘Perhaps one of the rooms in the Village Hall could be used as a library and archive’ 'The village hall has historic character. Lack of funds has led to its neglect, and refurbishment is the answer, giving the village traditional facilities to be proud of, do not demolish just for the sake of it’ Action Achieved: The interior of the Village Hall Meeting Room has now been refurbished, decorated and part of the roof has been re-slated. New disabled ramps have been installed to comply with regulations, with the help of a Lottery Grant.Action Plan: Fit out a room in the village hall with computers and reprographic machines. LOCAL FACILITIES Few residents seemed particularly interested in the question, with 30 - 40% having no opinion. Of those that did, most people rated facilities as poor, especially for the 15 - 24 age bracket, although the over-60's did a little better as shown below.
Only 80 people (60%) responded when asked what clubs they would like to be involved in. The top % was for a gardening club (36%) and would certainly be possible with 29 enthusiastic people. The numbers of people who would like to be involved in something is shown below; interestingly there were few suggestions for children’s activities.
‘Quizzes, rambling’ ‘Penny farthing cycling’ ‘Why not mention the cricket club – we have one’ PUBLIC TOILETS 73 people (60%) felt public toilets could be incorporated in a refurbished or new village hall. NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH In general this is supported - 72 (59%) people believe that a Neighbourhood Watch scheme would be a good idea, although 27 (22%) do not, 23 (19%) had no opinion. ‘There is one anyway – isn’t there?’ ‘Possible support’ ‘Don’t live in village’ Action Plan: This sounds like something positive the community can set up.[Previous Page][Index][Next Page] [DF&F Main Menu] [Community Profiles Menu] [Community Appraisals Menu] [Top of Page] [Devon C.C.
