Lynton & Lynmouth Community Appraisal 1996

HOUSING

94 households are in rented accommodation representing 21% of households. 44 households indicated they were in need of alternative accommodation. 9 Wanter starter homes to rent or buy and 26 wanted family homes to rent or buy. 6 wanted residential care or sheltered housing. Only 8 household members had moved from the area for housing reasons indicating other people may have preferred to wait until suitable local housing was available.

Particular attention is drawn to the need for additional rented accommodation for 37 people or 13 households. 10 are onthe needs register and 7 have been for more than a year. 30 indicated that a rent range of £ 40 to £ 80 per week was acceptable. In an area where vacant privately owned accommodation is often used as holiday accommodation, bringing a higher financial return, there may exist a need for housing association development to meet the demand.

EMPLOYMENT

Only 29% of adult respondents are employed and a further 26% are self-employed, 27% are wholly retired and only 3% are unemployed. This is a very low level of unemployment though in winter many mauy not be in full-time employment.

41% work at home, 32% elsewhere in the parish and 27% outside the parish with most of these travelling up to 30 miles for their work.
