Littleham Community Survey Report - June 1998
Cars and parking
- 279 households own 245 cars or vans and 22 motorbikes
- As some households will have more than one car there are many households without any vehicle
- Where vehicles are parked is shown in the chart below:
- Street parking was considered inadequate by 40% of respondents (184 people Areas where additional street parking was thought to be needed included: Littleham Road; Littleham Cross shops; Midway; the estate; Littleham School; Capel Lane.
- 45% (194 people) think additional off-road parking is required, and suggestions most favoured included:
- people's front gardens
- unused grass areas
- The Green
ACTION: EDDC staff to inform community of options & costs through newsletter. Further discussion on parking/traffic issues through newsletter.
(EDDC tenants are able to claim, after obtaining consent, a grant of £250 to help pay for constructing a hardstanding in their garden area. However this only pays for some of the costs.)
Traffic
- 77% (375 people) felt that there was a speeding problem in Littleham
- 66% (314 people) would like to see some traffic calming measures introduced
- The suggested areas were (in order : Capel Lane; Littleham Road; Pankhurst to Sandy Bay; the estate roads; Salterton road; The (old) village; Green to the Church; Salterton Road/ Service Road.
- 59% (277 people) think that some form of controlled crossing is needed, particularly at:
- TESCO's on Salterton Road
- Littleham Cross
- Dinan Way junction
- Other suggestions included: Littleham Church & bridge; Capel lane; Primary School; B&Q entrance; Littleham Road shops; from the Green to the church; in Littleham village
ACTION: EDDC Community Development Officer to contact Devon County Council Highways Dept. regarding speed counters and the possibilities for a crossing at Tesco.
Accommodation
- 23 people said they were in need of alternative accommodation now.
- A mixture of alternative accommodation was needed, including family homes to rent, family homes to rent, family and starter homes to but

EDDC housing officers to be informed of minority who had need for alternative housing
Is new housing needed?
- 32% of respondents (200 people) felt no new housing was needed
- 17% (106 people, of which 90 live on the estate) felt housing should be provided for local people.
- 11% (71 people0 wanted housing provided for low income families
- 10% (64 people) thought housing was needed for young people
ACTION: EDDC housing officers to inform relevant officers
The Leisure Centre - are the activities adequate?
- 162 people (35%) felt the activities were not adequate.
- So, what did people want to more of? Of the options suggested, people wanted:
ACTION: The idea of provision of school holiday and after school activities drew support largely from adults. WPC Wright to liase with Leisure Centre/Youth Club. Further discussion to be initiated through the Littleham Newsletter.
The Village Hall - are the activities adequate?
28% (130 people) thought the activities were not adequate.
Of those who live in the old village who answered thisquestion, 40% (46 people) felt the activities were not adequate.
Of the opinions suggested, people wanted:
ACTION: Further discussion needed through newsletter. it has been suggested that more funding is needed to up-grade the building. Recommended that EDDC work with Village Hall Committee.
