Landkey and Swimbridge Newland Community Appraisal

SECTION A - GENERAL ISSUES (cont.)

Education and Training

Those people who responded have quite a mixture of qualification levels. About a quarter (26%) have O level/GCSE/CSE as their highest qualification, whilst another quarter (27%) have a degree, diploma, HND or HNC. Another quarter (26%) have no qualifications.

61% (362 people) think that provision for adult learning in Landkey is poor. 220 people would be interested in taking work related training opportunities now or in the future. 115 people (57%) mentioned wanting new technology/computer training. 78 (39%) mentioned skilled/craft related training.

Landkey would be the most popular training centre - mentioned by 98% of respondents, but 75% said that they could get to Barnstaple.

141 people would nrol for an IT evening course in Landkey and 36 poeple for a daytime course. 34 people would need creche/childcare facilities.

At the other end of the educational scale, 72% of respondents (449) said that Landkey needs a nursery/playgroup facility. 380 of these would support it being accommodated on the old primary school site. 110 people said that they would use the playgroup facility for their children. A total of 93 children would be sent, either now or when they reach the right age.

The results of the questions in adult and pre-school education are significant in relation to the old primary school initiative. See later in Section B.

Health and Social Services

All services were reported as good by at least 50% of respondents using them, apart from day care. The doctor, district nurse and ambulance service are reported as good by over 80% of respondents using the service and expressing an opinion. Day care is used by only 2 people, one of whom thinks it is reasonable and one poor.

Note that many of these services are not used by most respondents. The doctors' services are used by 72% of respondents. The other services are all used by less than 12% of respondents.

23 people reported that they often have problems getting to a chemist. 18 people often have difficulty getting to the dentist whilst a further 85 have occasional problems. Over 100 people reported occasional problems in getting to hospital, the doctor or chemist. Although the majority of people do not have problems, there is a large enough group of people having problems to need further consideration.

Sport, Recreation and Social Facilities

Very few people thought that Landkey offers good recreational and social facilities. In the under 8s, 8-14 and 15-24 year olds facilities are seen as poor by at least 64% of respondents expressing an opinion. Opinion of facilities for 25-60 year olds is split between reasonable and poor, as it is for the over 60 age group. The opportunities for providing further facilities are discussed further in Section B.

Other Issues

There were several issues highlighted by responses to the questionnaire which were in addition to the questions asked. In the main these refer to the problem of vandalism and crime throughout the village, the need for more police presence and for a neighbourhood watch scheme.

There are a concerns about road safety particularly with regard to the number of vehicles parked along the main road and the excess speed of many vehicles through the village.

There are concerns also about the general state of the village particularly fouling of paths by digs and untidy, overgrown hedges in some places, affecting visibility on some roads.
