Lamerton Community Appraisal - 1997

Employment

  1. Employment Status
    a. 62% (208) of respondents are in paid employment with a good mix of types of work. 76 of these are self employed which is high, 50 of the respondents work, which is low. There are 70 retired respondents. The main place of work/study for 125 people (41%) is their home, this is high and may reflect the mainly agricultural nature of the Parish.

    Question 11. Current Occupation

    Current Occupation

    b. There are 14 respondents seeking work and most (8) have been looking for less than 6 months. In the main, they seek professional (5), unskilled manual (4) and clerical (4) work. Full-time work is sought by 50 % of these respondents.

  2. Work Opportunities. 80 respondents run businesses employing, in total, 151 people, 60 businesses are within the parish, the majority of these in agriculture. Most of these had no vacancies and no training scheme in place. Only 4 people thought they might become self-employed in the next year, the principle barrier to doing this was lack of start-up finance.
Health and Social Services

  1. Service and Quality. The doctor service has been used by most respondents, but extraordinarily little use is made of other medical facilities. All the services used receive an accolade from the majority of users.

  2. Transport. There are 39 users who "often" experience difficulties in getting to the medical facilities. A further 93 "occasionally" have difficulty. This needs further attention.
Local Countryside and Environment
  1. A keen interest was shown in all aspects of the environment. Polution worried 326 respondents and all the suggested improvements to the environment received support by at least 50% of respondents. A remarkable 90% supported maintaining footpaths, wildlife protection, removing litter, and repairinggates/styles etc. 173 respondents were prepared to take part in a "Clean-up Lamerton" event twice a year. A can/bottle bank was supported by 181 replies.
Neighbourhood Watch
  1. A neighbourhood watch scheme was supported by 233 people (66%) and 69 said they would help/run the scheme. This certainly deserves persuing.
