4. EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • 981 people responded positively to the suggestion of the provision of training facilities. 258 (26%) would like Professional/Managerial training, 385 (39%) Skill/Craft training, and a large number, 626 (64%), would like to improve their new Technology/Computing skills.
  • A particular wish was expressed for the use of Tresillian and School computer facilities in the summer holidays.
  • 99.9% would like these training centres to be situated in Kingsbridge. 71% felt that present Adult Learning facilities were either good or reasonable in Kingsbridge.
  • Kingsbridge Community College is seen to serve the community excellently or adequately by 71%.
  • Kingsbridge Primary School was similarly viewed by 61%, though many reservations were expressed about the building limitations there.
  • Support for both schools was strong; 485 of respondents would be happy to raise funds, 424 to donate money and 645 would participate in a school draw. 166 would help to fund or donate equipment and nearly 274 offered work experience opportunities. 294 would act as unpaid volunteers, so a large pool of goodwill exists.

  • Computer PictureWhen the Lower School (Greenhill) site becomes available, 1,142 would like to see it used for general housing, and 331 suggested retirement homes. 273 would like to see a new improved Library occupying the space.

Recommendation: The demand for training, particularly in new technology, should be addressed by the Kingsbridge Community College and the local FE Colleges.

Recommendation: The other findings be brought to the attention of the Governing Bodies of the Kingsbridge Community College and the Kingsbridge Primary School so as they may take any appropriate action.

5. HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES

Replies to the question asking for opinions about local services produced a wide range of response sizes and views, depending on people’s experiences.

  • Of the 2,190 people commenting on the service provided by local doctors, 2117 saw the quality of service as good or reasonable, with only 73 (3%) seeing it as poor.
  • Approval of District Nursing, Health Visiting and Mental Health provision ranged between 99% and 78%; the Emergency Ambulance Service received a 95% positive response. However, the number of respondents was much lower than to the question of doctors’ services.

  • Many expressed concern at the lack of NHS Dental provision, positive reaction to local dental care ran at 89%.
  • Dentist PictureThose who use these local services were asked about ease of access to them. The least satisfying response was to NHS dentists, with 47 (43%) suffering frequent or occasional difficulty. Other services received largely positive replies, ranging from 69% never having a problem accessing counselling services to 90% similarly with opticians.
  • However, 70 (34%) had difficulty in getting to the Social Services Office.
  • Opinion about lack of an Evening Surgery at the Norton Brook Health Centre was fairly equally split. 956 people find it inconvenient, but 927 do not, with 523 offering no view.

Recommendation: The great concern at the lack of NHS Dental Health Services should be drawn to the attention of the Secretary of State for Health.

Recommendation: The Norton Brook Medical Centre should provide evening services.

Recommendation: The other findings above should be brought to the attention of the appropriate agencies for their consideration and action as appropriate.

6. TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT

  • 1,342 households own 1,564 cars and 863 motor bikes.

  • 1,428 (59%) people felt that traffic regulations were adequately enforced, although 1,281 (52%) would like to see more traffic calming measures.

  • Replies to type and positioning of new measures invoked 3,648 responses, and a variety of speed reducing methods was endorsed, ranging from the mechanical, speed bumps, cameras and strips, to the mandatory, reduced speed limits and more police personnel activity.
  • Many areas of the town were stressed as requiring attention. Church Street, Cookworthy Road, Duncombe Street and Fore Street were seen as prime candidates, by the majority of respondents, and each of the housing estates had its advocates.
  • A specific question about the popularity of a one-way system for entering and leaving Kingsbridge produced an evenly split response with 45% in favour, 42% against.
  • Similarly, the suggestion of pedestrianising Fore Street produced 40% in favour, 53% against.
  • There were a number of requests for "safe" taxi stop off points in Fore Street.

"Should have 20 mph speed limit in Duncombe Street and on the housing estates"

Recommendation: DCC should introduce traffic calming measures to reduce traffic speed in Church Street, Cookworthy Road, Duncombe Street and Fore Street.
