3.8 AREAS OF TOWN TO BE IMPROVED

Seven specific sites were named as choices, provoking 7,041 responses, with 152 (6%) suggesting other examples.

Extra comments were made about the lack of screening and landscaping of Saffron Park. The safety position of two petrol stations and the Oil Depot in close proximity also produced extra comments.

Recommendation: The Town Centre Action Group should note the above comments and devise an action plan to address regeneration in the parts of the Town that are identified.

3.9 SHOP APPEARANCE AND ACCESS

  • 86% felt that the outside appearance of Kingsbridge shops was good

85% felt that the interior appearance was also good
60% found it was easy to move around inside the shops

  • However, only 25% found access to shops of an acceptable standard.

"More shops, less Estate Agents and Charity shops"

"Very few shops cater for wheelchairs or prams"

3.10 IMPROVING TRADE IN KINGSBRIDGE

Recommendation: The above responses, and particularly the problems of access to shops, should be conveyed to traders via the Kingsbridge District Chamber of Commerce.

Newspapers Picture3.11 INFORMATION ABOUT LOCAL EVENTS

2,354 responses were made to this question and additional comments showed that many really care about the issue. (62%) 1,463 felt well informed.

Suggestions for providing more information included:

  • More Noticeboards (303), and Electronic Noticeboard (158).
  • Most (672), however, were in favour of a regular NEWSLETTER.

Recommendation: The Town Council should evaluate the publication of a regular newsletter.

3.12 HOUSING

The questions about housing produced very mixed responses.

  • Brick & Cement Picture94 questionnaires identified a member of their household requiring alternative accommodation.
  • 66 were said to be in need now, 40 over the next 3 years and 37 over the next 4-10 years.

The type of accommodation required for these was:

The more general questions on housing produced many more responses, particularly to those asking which specific groups of people need housing, what type of housing is required and what is acceptable housing development

  • Provision for the First Time Buyer is seen as important by 50% of respondents.
  • 37% would like to see more Council/Housing Association housing. A need for Private rented accommodation was expressed by 17%, for Sheltered Accommodation by 17% and Family Housing by 23%.
  • 20% offered no opinion.

"Ensure low cost housing does not become holiday homes"

People varied considerably on what they saw as acceptable housing development.

Housing Picture67% would like to see the Conversion of Redundant Buildings.

22% want Single Dwellings. 36% would like to see small group development of less than 10 houses 13% are in favour of flats and only 11% of Carefully Designed Larger Groups. 14% would like to see no further housing development.

  • 95 people would like to be re-housed in Kingsbridge and 12 elsewhere in the South Hams.
  • 28 people had spent less than 1 year on the Housing Register; 23 had spent 1-2 years, 25 between 2-4 years and 26 more than 4 years.
  • 2520 responded to the question asking if they were a permanent resident of Kingsbridge and only 29 (1%) were not.

Recommendation: The above findings should be brought to the attention of the Local Plan Review Team, the SHDC Housing department and the South Hams Housing Association.

3.13 SPORT

Replies were invited to the questions whether the Sporting Facilities in the area were adequate and which facilities would be used if they could be provided and with what frequency.

  • 73% of the 2,463 who responded said that the provision of Sporting Facilities was adequate. 16% felt it was not and 11% offered no opinion, often proffering the reason of advanced age.

21 other suggestions included a roller rink, ten-pin bowling alley or netball court.

Recommendation: The Town Council should work with appropriate bodies to improve the sports facilities in the Town.
