2. PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS

Households in Kingsbridge average 2.3 occupants, and, of those people completing the questionnaire, 48% were male and 52% were female. The following table shows the breakdown of males and females in these households. 1564 cars and 83 motor bikes are owned by the 1342 households responding.

3. ENVIRONMENT

3.1 CATTLE MARKET SITE

  • 1254 (48%) people would like to see the Cattle Market Site used for parking, either for residents, the public, or sports centre users.Vegetable Selection Picture
  • 805 (33%) people would like it to be a skateboard park.
  • 345 (14%) people envisaged it used for low cost housing.
  • 324 (13%) people would prefer it as a children’s playground.

"I love living in Kingsbridge - people are friendly and variously active"

Recommendation: SHDC should consider the responses on possible future options for the Cattle Market.

3.2 THE TOWN SQUARE AND QUAYSIDE.

  • The major issue seen as very important or worth doing by 2065 people (92% of those who responded), was that of improvements to the footpath between the Shelter and the Crabshell Inn.
  • 1027 (50%) were against a tidal barrier.
  • 1174 (63%) were against more pontoons.
  • 1279 (68%) against any commercial development of the square and quayside.
  • Improvements to the slipway produced a more balanced response 38% were against, 40% for, with a further 9% seeing it as very important.
  • Reinstating the decorative lighting was seen as a good move by 80%.

"Get them to tidy up - it looks a mess"

Other suggestions included a floating restaurant, a bridge across the water and quite a number of requests to leave it all alone!

Recommendation: The Town Council should give high priority in liaison with the District and County Councils to improving the footpath between the memorial shelter and the Crabshell Inn.

The Market in the Town Square was another popular area for improvement.

  • 1659 (75%) would like to see more local produce sold.
  • 1635 (73%) would like to see more varied goods for sale.
  • food, flower and fish stalls were desired by between around a quarter of respondents.
  • 20% wished to attract French traders.
  • Market days were canvassed and a clear majority 1326 (66%) are happy with Tuesdays, although 889 (44%) see Saturday as a good day and 847 (42%) would support Thursday.

Recommendation: SHDC should encourage the continuous improvement of the markets on the Town Square in line with the responses above.

3.3 TOILET FACILITIESMother & Baby Picture

Those on the Quay were considered acceptable by 56%. The toilets in Fore St. were only acceptable to 34%, unacceptable to 48%.

  • 50% Wanted better lighting.
  • 42% Baby changing facilities were considered to be the most important improvements.
  • If made to pay, 1,122 (47%) would continue to use the toilets, 1,255 (53%) would not.

Recommendation: The SHDC should note the low levels of satisfaction with the toilet facilities in the Town, particularly in Fore Street, and take the appropriate action

3.4 TELEPHONE BOXESMan on Phone Picture

  • 41% considered these adequate in number. Separate responses indicated a lack in many areas, including the major housing estates and particularly the loss of the top of Fore St. box.
  • 50% considered lighting of boxes to be adequate 12% inadequate.
  • Asked if boxes were frequently vandalised 297 (16%) said yes, 430 (23%) said no and 1150 (61%) had no opinion. 351 (19%) considered that repairs were carried out promptly, 133 (7%) disagreed and 1333 (74%) had no opinion.

Recommendation: BT should be requested to re-instate a public call box at the top of Fore Street.

3.5 QUALITY OF SERVICE

There was, on the whole, a positive response to the quality of services.

  • Mail/Post Picture96% found collection of domestic waste to be good or reasonable.
  • 78% had this view of the Torr Quarry Recycling Centre, which was seen as doing a good job with facilities which should be larger.
  • 85% felt the Health Centre provided a good or reasonable service. Only 3% found it poor.
  • Postal Services were seen as good or reasonable by 94%.

Recommendation: Congratulations on the high quality of waste disposal, health centre and postal services should be conveyed to those responsible.

Lorry Picture3.6 ROADS, PAVEMENTS AND OPEN SPACES

A wide range of responses greeted the suggestions, with 53% of respondents considering even more issues very important.

  • 94% saw removal of litter as a necessity.
  • 93% would like to see verges mown.

The issue of dogs fouling roads, pavements and open spaces was addressed by many respondents, often stressed in additional comments.

  • 64% felt more dog wardens were required.
  • 97% want owners to clean up their own dog mess. This question attracted most response in the section, with 2204 people replying.
  • The issue of safety railings on the Quay came up again, with 66% seeing them as necessary.
  • 77% would like better landscaping in the area, with 51% seeing trees on streets as important.
  • 66% would like to see flower baskets erected.
  • 93% see a need to keep open green spaces within the town boundary.
  • Uneven pavements cause concern to 97%, with under 3% not finding this an issue. Other suggestions include better lighting in town backways, more security cameras to reduce vandalism and boat crime. The dog fouling question was reiterated at length.

Recommendation: SHDC should be strongly encouraged in its campaign to get dog owners to clean up their own dog mess.

3.7 NUMBER OF LOWERED KERBS

  • This issue produced much comment in addition to the question responses, which were :
  • 1138 (48%) felt there were sufficient lowered kerbs in the Town Centre and 904 (41%) in residential areas.
  • 601 (25%) disagreed about the Town Centre and 515 (23%) about residential areas.

Additional comments dwelt on the frequent blocking of existing kerbs by parked vehicles.

"Strict enforcement of lorry parking on pavements etc"

Recommendation: DCC should note the strength of feeling on environmental improvements and take appropriate action.
