10. GENERAL

The questionnaire asked whether Parishioners would be prepared to pay a slightly higher Parish Council Tax to meet some of the needs of Instow which may be identified by the appraisal process. 63.2% said they would be prepared to pay; 26.8% were against. 10% expressed no opinion.

The section reserved at the end of the questionnaire produced a very wide response on a variety of topics. Here's a sample of what you had to say:

"Village in general very easy to live in and good fun. Well done to all. "

"Instow is a beautiful village with its own distinct character. It has avoided becoming part of the urban sprawl of Fremington Yelland and Bickington. "

"All in all it is a good place to live."

"Congratulations this extensive questionnaire together. "

"Good idea whoever thought of this, well done!"

"I hope more positive comments are taken into account and it is not as negative as the last"

"Jet skis - noisy ones banned completely. Silent versions 100 metres from waters edge. "

"The recycling pavilion is a perfect pain for those living close by "

"Crane parked at the end of the pier is an eyesore. It imposes itself into any photographs my guests would wish to take. "

"Whatever the future holds for Instow I sincerely hope that nothing will adversely affect the wonderful friendly community spirit that at present exists in the village."

"The present village hall should be upgraded by a good firm with no fiddles."

"The burial ground is the place to go for solace"

"Of the greatest concern to me is the amount of dog fouling around Instow. Owners should be made to clear up after their dogs."

"Enforce the law, prohibiting cyclists using pavements. "

"Ensure there are no amusement arcades!"

11. CONCLUSIONS & ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Community Appraisal was designed to give everyone an opportunity to express an opinion on a range of issues within Instow Parish. The poor return of completed appraisal questionnaires was disappointing to those who put a considerable amount of work into its organisation and production. The poor response from the younger generation hopefully indicates that they enjoy busy lives and does not reflect apathy towards village matters.

Many thanks if you are one of the households who took the time to complete the questionnaire. Your comments and views are appreciated and will hopefully go some way towards maintaining or enhancing Instow Parish.

If you did not complete an appraisal but are concerned about any issues within the village please contact one of the Parish Councillors.

The Parish Council meets in the Parish Hall on the 3rd Thursday of each month (except August). 15 minutes are reserved for parishioners to ask any pertinent questions of the Council.

It is hoped that the Parish Council can use the results of this appraisal to carry out improvements within the village. Many of these improvements will require the help and co-operation of other local and public authorities and private landowners. Every effort will be made to liaise and co-operate with these bodies to achieve our aims.

And finally, thanks are due to the people who generously gave up their time and energies to make this appraisal possible. They are:

  • Members of the appraisal steering group.
  • Members of Instow Parish Council.
  • Members of the Community Council of Devon.
  • Instow parishioners who assisted in the delivery of the forms.
  • Bill Pain, Clerk to Instow Parish Council.
