6. SPORTS, SOCIAL, ENTERTAINMENT AND RELIGION 6.1 VILLAGE HALL Opinion was split 50/50 on the adequacy of the current village hall. Of the 109 persons who considered the current hall inadequate, 17 favoured re-building on the present site, 18 favoured further upgrading of the present hall, 36 favoured the building of a new hall on a new site and 44 a new building incorporating community facilities. A general question was asked relating to which additional indoor activities Parishioners would like to see in the village hall. This question drew a predictably wide range of responses. The most common responses were as follows:
The village hall is a community facility. If any Parishioners wish to organise events on a regular or one off basis then they should contact any member of the Parish Hall Committee for further information. 6.2 CHILDRENS PLAY AREA Over 70% of those who expressed an opinion favoured the provision of a children's play area in the village. This figure is somewhat surprising considering the age table provided earlier. 6.3 ALLOTMENTS Of those expressing an opinion the majority considered that there are sufficient allotments within the village. Almost 60%, however, did not express an opinion. 6.4 LANE END TOILETS 135 people out of 244 were of the opinion that the Lane End toilets should be re-built. 60 people expressed no opinion. Other general comments contained within the questionnaire indicated that some refurbishment/enhancement works to this building would be desirable. 6.5 PLACES OF WORSHIP "The church provides a focal point for the village." A place of worship was considered important to 63.1% of respondents. Almost 44% would support the use of public funds for a place of worship. Apart from traditional uses, many considered the Church a focal point for the village and a place for quiet and reflection. Opinions were sought on ideas to celebrate/commemorate the millennium. The first four suggestions in rank order were identified as:
Other common suggestions included provision of a children's play area, provision of sports facilities (tennis courts, bowling green or village green) and floral tributes. Almost 80% of respondents approved expenditure of appropriate funds which are held by the Parish Council or Village Hall Management Committee on all or some of the above suggestions. "Church service - don't leave Christ out of the millennium." 8. EDUCATION, HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES Many comments were made on questionnaires querying why opinions were not sought regarding the provision of a new primary school. At the time when the appraisal questionnaire was being drafted the need for a new primary school in Instow had already been identified. The siting and provision of the new school, together with any associated facilities, will follow a full public consultation exercise involving the whole village. This process has now started and further information relating to it can be obtained from any Parish Councillor or Instow School Governor. 8.1 EDUCATION The appraisal questionnaire identified 74 people who would be interested in vocational/adult training opportunities now or in the future. Of these, the majority were interested in skill/craft related training or new technology/computing. Of those requiring training approximately 70% would be able to get to training centres at Barnstaple or Bideford. 8.2 HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES Of the range of health and social services facilities outlined the vast majority of respondents found the services good or reasonable. A small minority of people has trouble getting to some of the health facilities. Particularly identified were NHS Dentists, hospitals and Chiropodists ."I am one! (Dentist)" 8.3 VOLUNTARY WORK Almost 30% of respondents carried out some form of voluntary work. The most common responses were helping, shopping for and visiting elderly people, helping voluntary organisations within Instow and helping in a hospital/hospice environment..
