Horrabridge Towards 2000 - The Village Appraisal

Traffic and Transport

Road

This was obviously something people felt strongly about.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Pass information to Devon County Council and encourage the Parish Council and villages as individuals to lobby for speed restrictions/traffic clming.

Car Parking: 67% thought car parking facilities poor. Lots of people want a central car park and there was also support for parking restrictions and traffic free zones.

Pedestrian Life: 59% thought pedestrian facilities adequate or good, however, there are specific areas within the village that cause concern.

Cyclists: 45% thought facilities for cyclists were poor. There were calls for a cycle lane on A386, a special lane to Tavistock and for a cycling area in the park.

Public Transport: Horrabridge has a better bus service than most villages. 80% thought service adequate or good.

Vehicle Use: 68% people have daytime access to a car. This still means that over 300 have not.

Car Sharing: 383 people (34%) share vehicles at present - 235 for leisure, 130 for car pooling for wook, 52 for business journeys and 40 for taking children to school. Perhaps there could be a "clearing point" to enable people to get together.

RECOMMENDATIONS: The Millennium Cycle path from Barnstaple to Plymouth will probably pass close to the village. It would be wonderful if a spur could come into the village. This would help villagers who want to cycle safely out of the village, and also bring business into the village shops and pubs.

Sport, Social and Entertainment

Of those that answered the question regarding facilities in the village the majority hod no opinion. Those that had an opinion, however, generally agreed that facilities were at best reasonable but mostly poor. Only 45 (6%) thought that facilities for up to 8 years were good, 10 (1%) for 15-24 year olds and 55 (7%) for people over 60 years.

What would you like to see or do in the village?

This is your top five but any of the activities listed would be viable:
1) Swimming - 401 respondents 2) Keep fit - 229 respondents 3) Drama/plays - 206 respondents 4) Rambling - 188 respondents 5) Football - 179 respondents

There was little to choose between the next five activities: tennis (176), discos (162), aerobics (150), art (139) and line dancing (136). Of course, these returns cover a broad spectrum of ages. Further analysis shows that the youth of the village are asking for skate boarding and roller blading facilities along with coaching for rugby and netball.

Fourteen individuals have volunteered their services to get things started.

Village Events

A huge 72% of those who answered the questionnaire would like some form of Millennium celebration. The most popular were street parties (392), marquee in the park (379), or a barbecue (339). Of those who volunteered their services 49% (40) are willing to assist with millennium celebrations.

those in favour of something more permanent prefer tree planting (358), seats (311) or a commemorative stone (178). However, there was no single event or structure that most would favour.

649 people (57% of respondents) would like to see annual events taking place. Again no one event came out on top. The three most popular events would be a fete (282), a carnival (273) or a May fair (215).
