Horrabridge Towards 2000 - The Village Appraisal

Emergency, Environmental & Other Services

RECOMMENDATION: Information to be passed to the Parish Council and the local police station and person responsible for a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme within the area.

The following enhancements were suggested for the village (in order of total numbers responding):

RECOMMENDATION: Parish Council in conjunction with the Devon County Council, and Action Groups to investigate all these problems and make suitable recommendations aimed at increasing public awareness, investigating potential sites and costing all appropriate schemes (i.e. provision of dog wardens, traffic calming, increased frequency for rubbish collection etc.).

Other enhancements, which found favour with enough people to make them viable, were:

RECOMMENDATION: review current facilties and investigate costs to extend existing play facilities, find a suitable site for skateboarding and adventure trail areas and explore viability of a Schout Hut and Coffee Shop. Other minority suggestions will be assessed under the appropriate specific headings.

People who have used the health and/or social services have said in general that most services are good or reasonable. Some 700 people in the area had used the services of the Doctor over the last five years. 96% considered the service to be good or reasonable. Other services are used less frequently but are still considered to be important and it should be noted that a number of people have indicated a poor service with regard to the following:

Difficulty in getting to services was also reported, primarily in the following areas:

RECOMMENDATIONS: Information to be passed on to Devon Social Services and the Health Authority with specific emphasis on all concerns.

Community to be asked to look at possibility of setting up a group to provide a community car service, and assisting with prescriptions and other requirements. A regular mobile chemist should also be investigated.

Disability

42 people (4%) are registered disabled. Most find access good or reasonable to shops (71%), street access (63%) and access to community biuldings (65%). However, it should be noted that nine people (33% of those answering the question) considered parking to be poor.

RECOMMENDATION: Information to be passed to the Parish Council and Devon County Council supporting any initiative to dedicate parking and provide better access to the centre of the village for the disabled and mothers with push chairs. Shops should be notified of requirements for the disabled including the need for wider doors.

Church

Most people (789 - 83%) want no additions to the current religious activities, but of the 169 people (18%) who would like to see other uses for the church(es), their options, all potentially viable, are:

RECOMMENDATION: Pass information to the Rector
