ENVIRONMENT

It is clear from the response to questions about our environment that many are concerned to protect it and support those whose livelihoods are derived from the land. Overwhelmingly (83%) it was felt that ‘All of Us’ are responsible for the countryside.

Of the many features in need of protection in our countryside, trees and woodland, rivers and streams, hedgerows (properly laid of course) and historic buildings and remains were mentioned most frequently.

RecyclingFlower meadows were also mentioned, and one person spoke of preserving the integrity of Farming - Dartmoor - Holne woods - The existing village.

There are a number of people concerned about overgrazing on the moor, which reduces biodiversity and increases erosion. Other comments about possibly damaging practices include black plastic from silage bales, excessive hedge cutting, the use of agrochemicals, taking 3 cuts of rye in a season for silage, lack of and under use of trees, poor water management and low-flying aircraft.

TreeOrganic farming was frequently mentioned in answer to the question about which land-use practices could be encouraged. Also traditional skills, river fishing for locals, planting softwoods, oak and ash trees, help for youngsters to start up in farming, bracken control and flower meadow and heather regeneration.

  • An overwhelming majority of 78% wanted overhead wires underground in the village
  • The main disturbance to the Parish is from low-flying aircraft (78%, 59)
  • 32 people would like trees planted on their land
  • 31 people would volunteer to be involved in environmental schemes
  • 26 people would use a community compost scheme and 23 a community polytunnel.

Footpaths

Two thirds of us know where the footpaths are and can follow them easily, although some people would like signposts and find them overgrown with bushes or nettles.

  • 89 people would like footpath maps erected in the village

Recommendation: Discuss at Public Meeting on 20th July

Recycling

With regards to recycling, paper and glass came out top, with over 70% of respondees saying they would use these facilities at least monthly (with about 30% weekly). The response to other options was also very encouraging.

Interestingly, 43% said they would use wheely bins for recycling on a weekly basis and the same amount (42%) said they wouldn’t use them at all! (We could use them to charge at each other on the road if it came to blows).

Would the person who suggested tying plastic bags to cows behinds please step up so we can volunteer you on a pilot scheme – duties to include emptying and washing them out for re-use of course!

Recommendation: Pass this information to the Parish Council
